Down Glen Shiel and turn left at Shiel Bridge (the head of the loch; ferry is signed). Stop near the top of the pass and look back for the classic Five Sisters of Kintail view. Pub in Glenelg is excellent, and the brochs a few miles down the road at Eilanreach are worth a look. If it's near sunset go a little further to the point above Sandaig (Ring of Bright Water), the view of the sunset over the Cuillins is superb.

Glad the ferry's still running. It's been up for sale, and I never heard if they got a buyer. Legend has it that it's actually an old WW2 landing craft, but I have no idea if that's true. It has a platform on top that's just big enough for 4 cars, and which gets spun round (by hand!!!) so you can roll on/roll off.

Hi all, I have to agree. This is a great route, the first view point, towards the top of the pass, above Ratagan, is superb. Once in Glenelg, continue on to Arnisdale and Corran, you wiil pass the view point that is mentioned above, this offers fine views across the Sound of Sleat to Knoydart and the South of Skye, including the Cuillins, another great view point, but having got this close it would be a shame to miss the Arnisdale road, and the view into Loch Hourn from the top of the hill.
Once on the way to the ferry, if riding an off road style bike try taking the dirt road to Ardintoul, turn right onto the wide unmade track nr Benera farm. This a super quiet track down to the half dozen houses at Ardintoul, worth doing just for the hell of it, with a good view along Loch Ash to Dornie.

Deffo not one for a sports bike.

I know this road too. It is mad. 1st and second gear tarmac? crazy!
The beach at Ord is a lovely spot to rest the nerves and stretch the legs. Beautiful place.

Try taking the B8083 from Broadford to Elgol, this road goes through Torrin and offers some truly excellent views of the Cuillin Hills. I suggest heading to Elgol in the mornings, when the sun (Sun? Highlands? It does happen!) is shining on the hills and they are not in shadow. the road around Torrin and Loch Slapin is wonderful, there is a fine cafe just on the exit of Torrin and a fine cafe in Elgol that serves some of the finest hot chocolate I've ever tasted, coffee is good too. And the views are excellent.

You may have gathered by now...I love this place.

Like ya say, its a great road, great views and a great way to go. I might pitch for the longer ferry next time as in good weather it would be a fantastic crossing.
No more tolls on the bridge!! so on and off as much as you like.
We stopped in a B&B just behind the white heather hotel in Kyleakin.
Watched otters and seals whilst eating a full english!!
Don't underestimate the lenght of time it takes to get from one end to the other.(lots of coaches and bimblers)
    Fantastic roads and view though!

I think you'll find it was a full Scottish you were eating.

How spooky is this ? I travel between Elgol, Torrin and Tarskivaig every day as part of work I am doing on Skye at the moment.
Nice scenery, even when the elements are against you

I used to ride over to Ardvasar on the trusty xl250, have a few jars, and come tearing back again. The speed limit is 60.

Great thread this! Me an my brother are planning a 2 week trip around Scotland for July this year, getting some good ideas here!

We'll basically be following the coast all the way from Newcastle (lil' bro has to come over on the ferry from the Netherlands) to the other side of Scotland and back to the ferry...

Have been looking forward to this trip since I came home from the last trip (France/Italy) last summer...

    Can't wait!
