I have to agree that spenging money on a decent helmet is worth it, but remember not everyone's head is the same shape!

I haven't managed to try on the Arai helmets which interest me yet, due to them not having my size in stock, but the only ones I have tried haven't really covered my chin properly!

After an unfortunate attempted Superman impression, courtesy of a 7.5ton Merc truck, I have discovered that expensive helmets are worth it. I'm not as hard as the M11 was my discovery so buying expensive helmets is a must.

I'll try and find an Arai in my size, but can see my self continuing with Shoei's as these are all I've had to date.

When everyone started looking cool with these new "adventure" lids I also had to look cool but was very reluctant to spend the dosh on the Arai so inspired by Maveric's vader look I got the HJC for comparison to his and also the Tour X.

After owning it for a while I'm very happy with it when used what it is intended for, off road touring/adventure riding. Jump on the motorway and it turns into a compressed air lung filling neck breaking lifesaverchecking thing. Visability is great, fit's great with all the doo daa stickers and also well know brand but not for taking the motorway to Germany.

Without sparking off too much contraversy I dare say it will be the same for the other "adventure" lids out there. Obviously it depend on the riders height and screen and...and...and.........

My point is this, get a cheapy and try the style/shape before you hand over all that cash. If it's for you, wait another month and get the Tour X, if not then you won't look cool anymore!!!!!

I saved the extra dosh and in the not too distant future I will be going for a normal full face Arai.

P.S. Have you noticed Chad not using the cap bit on his Tour X. This must say somefin about the motorway and adventure lids.

 (Sorry Chad but I needed a powerfull punchline)

Don't tell me it's cause you is want to look coola dan da rest???

I don't have an opinion on Arai/Marushin/HJC (nobody has mentioned the Airoh lid in the same style), but if you're thinking of the Arai see this thread:

    http://www.xrv.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=59561

I can vouch for Harry. Proper UK-spec. lid (some foreign Arais have a different shape) with all the right ECE/BSI/ACU stickers etc., payment via paypal, courier delivery.
flat out on utterly inappropriate tackle

I'm with Chad, my tour-x is the most comfortable lid i've ever had. I don't think the peak causes any real issues on the m/way bar the odd side wind.

Yeah I'm interested in that.. if the info is of the right type, might be worthy of keeping as a record on the wiki.

Summary: EU helmet standard (the ECE standard ECE22.05) is arguably inferior to other test regimes, particularly the Snell test.

(FYI, ECE22.05 also seems to be referred to as EN22/05)

The EN 22/05 impact regimen is less severe than it may appear for another reason as well. [The] equipment allows the headform to move freely in all six degrees of freedom in response to the impact [...] so that much of the severity of an impact is lost to rotations.
Full article is worth reading: http://www.smf.org/articles/mcomp2.html

Here's a list of Snell approved helmets: http://www.smf.org/certlist/std_M2005.html

The Tour-X is listed, of course. I can't find the HJC CL-XS but lots of HJC, including others in the CL range, are listed; maybe it's not tested yet. The Airoh and Marushin aren't on the Snell list, but that could just be because they're not tested, rather than failed the test.

I wouldn't lose sleep over this though. It's a damn good idea to wear a quality helmet, but whatever you wear on your head, you probably won't crash, and if you do it may well not involve a significant head impact, and if it does, even an expesive helmet may not save you, and even if it does make the critical difference, you may get splatted by a 38 tonne truck a few seconds later, and if that doesn't happen, a cheap lid may leave you dead where an expensive one would leave you a vegetable...

Just relax and enjoy the ride!
