    Re: helmets on a budget

Had a KBC for 2 years, cost £60 from http://www.cissburyleathers.co.uk/ it was an old paint scheme and I think was originally about £180. Great lid, never, ever fogged up (unlike my new shoei!) and was very comfy and had a huge visor giving great visibility. Double D fastener which is a plus. It wasn't the quietest helmet in all honesty but absolutely fine with ear plugs. Have an MX helmet from them too which is also good although has the seat belt type fastener which I'm not as keen on.

Get yourself up to the Manchester bike show at the G-MEX or whatever they call it now, next weekend, been the last 3 years and always good for a few bargains!

I wrap my nut in an Arai Tour-cross or a THOR MX lid - the arai is, obviously expensive, but the THOR was just over £100 and with a decent set of goggles its fine. Both are noisey, but as thats mainly to do with wind rush there's not much can be done about it IMHO.

HJC do a very good Tour-cross-a-like for not very much money and it looks fine - seen a couple in real life and they look like good kit.

When they kick at your front door How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head Or on the trigger of your gun
When the law break in How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement Or waiting on death row?.............

As others have said, I would not restrict yourself too much for some extra quid; not when your head is at stake. If need be, wait till next months pay packet for the extra few quid that will really open up your choice of decent safety gear. Also go for plain colours... cheaper than wierd, lairy graphics that don't actually make you go faster (seriously, its true....they don't)

Consider X-lites. A recent visit to a bike shop to help my dad choose a Schuberth revealed these are not the cheapo crap they once were.... Also HJC aren't too bad either. I got an CL-X4 for £85...down from £130, plus another £30 for goggles.

Lots of people suggest buying at a bike show. So you can add the cost of travel, there and back, plus the cost of entry, to the helmet.

Actually these shows should be free - theyre just a glorified shop, and who would pay to go into a bike shop?

And depending on what kind of biking you do, you might steer clear of motocross type lids - theyre noisy, catch the wind if you turn, they look weird IMO, and dont flip up.

Buy a helmet that fits well, and cost should be the least of your worries.

Personally, I spend all I can afford when I buy one.
I would tend to agree with Pieman, up to a point, I'm sure the very expensive helmets have nice features and they certainly have very pretty paintwork, personally I look for a helmet that has the features I want and fits properly, people have different shaped noggins (mines a fat wide 'ead), getting a helmet that doesn't fit, but has a number 46 on it and costs £500 isn't going to impress the nursies in A&E.

Gold ACU Badge and a proper fit

If you have a £60 head buy a £60 helmet. I value my head at atleast £200 and life has taught me that in most cases you do get what you pay for.... Don't skimp the most important part of your equipment.

Good point, but, every helmet carrying an ACU sticker will protect your head in an impact, regardless of make or cost.
