    1988 CR250R electrical issues

    Hello All

I am back on a bike after 25 yrs of no riding due to an accident. I purchased an 1988 CR250R that will shut off after riding for 10 to 15 minutes. I am guessing it may be the CDI, the stator or the pulse generator, since heat seems to be the issue. I shuts down just like you hit the kill switch, so I am ruling out a fuel issue. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I do not know about these types of engine but the CDI or Coil could be faulty.
Check the HT lead for damage.

Thanks for the help! The previous owner installed a new coil and it checks good, I have a CDI box on order so it's just a shot in the dark there, no real way to check a CDI box that I have found.

What is the HT lead you a referring to?

    Thanks again!

The HT lead is the lead from the coil to the spark plug.

I wouldn't of thought it was the coil or HT lead as the bike starts up and runs, this prooves that it's sparking, sounds like the cdi as it seems to be generated by heat. You could measure the resistance of the coil on the stator plate when it's cold and see hat it is, and then try it again when it's hot and see if there's much difference. If it's a2 stroke it could indicate towards a cold seizure but then it starts up again when it cools. Try the cdi first and see what happens you can always come back for more help again. We might be of some use

Thanks! The HT lead is new also so we'll wait on the new CDI box and see what happens.
Something odd though, The schematic for the stator coil shows one lead grounded but it reads high regardless of if the bike runs or not.

    Thanks for the help!

What run's high the resistance or the voltage?

The resistance should be very low according to the schematic, almost zero, but is high. I don't have the measurement in front of me right now.

i would say between o.1 and 0.5 would be ok if it is high indicates the cable or an part of it is breaking down resistance should always be as low as possible
