    Africa twin to Mongolia....

Hi, I'm fairly new here after lurking a while.
BMW GS's are my thing having had them for around 9 years and running offroad trips around Morocco etc.

Anyway, for my other work as a bike instructor I landed a mint low mileage RD07 AT which is proving suberb...which leads me to a dilema....next year I'm riding with a small group across Russia, around Mongolia and back via the 'Stans' and Pamir Highway, eventually to eastern Turkey and home.

But this affair with the AT has tempted me to use it for the trip in preference to my GS1150ADV mainly down to it's lighter weight, main draw back being less comfort and reduced fuel range.

Can anyone here convince me to take the Africa Twin?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Hello.

Having picked up a fallen Africa Twin and a GS1150 off the ground, I think I'd rather take the AT, unless you're built like Arnie!
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

I reckon if you've used the ADV for your previous trips, then take the opportunity to try the Africa Twin - I think you might be pleasantly suprised.

I don't care what anyone says - you can't compare the bikes as they are two totally different machines - but they are both VERY capable.

I'd love to hear your thoughts after using the Twin - have followed a lot of your ride reports over on GSer forum.

Make sure you have crashbars - and either carry a spare fuel pump or swap it out for a Facet - nothng else to cause any problems.........

The seat is admittedly not the best around - but there are lots of ways of improving it - having it sculpted, change the foam, airhawk, dead sheep.....but then again you might find it perfectly acceptable as standard.

Fuel range - most Twins are capable of at least 200 miles - depends how you are on the throttle - can be as low as 170 - or as high as 250 - so unless you're going somewhere 'really' remote this shouldn't cause an issue (anyhoo you could always siphon some out of your travelling companions BMW if needed )

For me the Africa Twin is a great bike - doesn't really excel at any one thing, but as a package it's brilliant

Please keep us updated - I'd love to see the ride report .

Yes you echo many of my early impressions.
I've only covered around 4k miles so far but that often involves 7 hours a day on the bike.
It's got the comfort of heated grips, chain oiler etc.

Crash bars and the next thing to buy, a Facet fuel pump shortly after.
I already use a sheepskin on the seat and still find it uncomfortable...my GS has all day comfort with a Corbin.

I just can't make my mind up with this bike yet I ride it almost everyday. The engine judders when in the wrong gear, and will hardly pull the skin off a rice pudding but I love the bike...it just does

Take the Twin, not only do you know the only things that might go wrong with it, you can carry all the possible spares reg/rec,fuel pump pliers---to savagley cut through the choke cable.
you can fix them all yourself with little more than some indentured labour....
