bloody cdi!

Hi all fellow transalp owners i last came on this forum about 3 years ago with problems with my bike and you all very helpfully told me it was my cdi unit, guess what its happened again, my bike is running like a sack of ****, I swapped the units over and it ran better for a short time then crap again, trouble is I can't tell which is the newer unit so don't know which unit is faulty ? I know I can try a new unit on either side to find the faulty one, just wondered if there was a way to tell before I purchase a new cdi?

If the Cdi is faulty it would effect the rev counter.
