    Swinton Insurance

I've just renewed my insurance and best offer was Swinton at £79 for the Varadero 1000 fully comp. What puts the icing on the cake is they are doing a £30 cash back just now so this effectively gets my insurance down to under £50 for a years motoring.

Being an old git does have some benefits after all.

    Re: Swinton Insurance

I've just called Swinton about changing over to the BMW and they have quoted me an increase in my premium of £17.50 for the 5 months remaining but a £25 fee for changing the paperwork.

It could have been worse I suppose. At least I know the beemer wont be that much more to insure next year.

Interestingly I checked about my cover when I will be in Germany this year and they tell me there is no charge and my cover will still be fully comp. That cheered me up a bit as I thought it would be third party only.

For how long are you in Germany? If you stay longer than (I think) a month then you need to get local insurance. That is how it works here. As Drogba found out.

Yes they mentioned a maximum contiguous time abroad. I can't remember if it was 30 or 60 days but as I'm only away for 2 weeks it won't be a problem.

    Re: Swinton Insurance

I've got one warning about Swinton. I insured Nessie with Swinton (cheapest quote) for the first year. Didn't make any claims (thankfully!) but certainly had no complaints with them. I checked prices before accepting renewal quote, it was still competitive. However, shortly after receiving my policy, I received a Motorcycle Personal Accident Insurance certificate, and a letter saying they would be deducting £4.99 a month for this. I didn't have any recollection of agreeing to this, but also wasn't certain that I'd NOT agreed to it, so I let it pass and decided that it was probably a good thing to have. However, shortly after this I received ANOTHER policy certificate for 'Personal Accident Insurance' and letter. This informed me that I was getting 'Free Personal Accident Insurance'. However, after reading the small print of the letter I discovered that I was getting free PAI for 3 months and thereafter they would be deducting £7.98 a month for it. Moreover, reading the details of the policy it excludes injury from (among many other things) 'motorcycling as a rider or passenger'. As I knew that I'd definitely not signed up to any such policy (I already have PAI cover anyway), I rang them up.

The man I spoke with was very polite and helpful. He agreed to cancel the policy immediately, and that no money would be taken from my bank a/c for it. However, he didn't seem in the least surprised. When I asked him whether it was usual business practice for them to do this, he replied that this would have originated from the Motorcycle unit and he couldn't comment. I got the impression that they are doing this on a regular basis.

So, if you insure with Swinton, make sure you read everything that they send, and that you're not paying for any additional cover that you don't want.

    Re: Swinton Insurance

I've had something similar with my car insurance. Zurich wanted to move me to another scheme which included stuff I didn't want. Recovery, legals etc that I get elsewhere. I called them as per their renewal and they said it would take 20mins to change me over. When I complained that they already had my details and nothing had changed the guy was unmoved, I told him that I was going elsewhere in view of this and he seemed quite happy about it. I also had to do the same with the bike insurance due to a premium hike. When will they learn that we are all savvi now and will look around. My mate did the Swintons route and was pleased, but I'll see if he gets unwanted extras.
