Are motad venom cans performance enhancing?

I've just taken out a policy and listed all of the modifications to the bike from standard (crash bars, center stand, luggage and so on) over the phone.

When receiving the policy through, the question:

Has the vehicle been modified or altered from the maker's specification? If yes, please provide full details on a separate sheet.

Has been answered no, and there's no record of the changes on the policy anywhere. Was a bit surprised because the reason I'd called them in person rather than just buying online was because I wanted to tell them about modifications (a few of them).

I've just got an email back from the broker, telling me

"Any modifications made or accessories fitted are acceptable, with most insurers, provided that they do not affect the performance of the bike, the BHP etc.. then they may need to be referred. So please advise if any of your changes do affect the performance.
Your insurer Aviva covers these up to the value of £100 and any accessories must be permanantly fixed to the bike. I have added the list from your email on to your policy, they do not need to be listed on your documents."

    Is this right?

When I phoned I told them about the exhaust and that it was a road legal motad venom, but that I wasn't sure if it was performance enhancing. I didn't think it was, but I'm not completely sure.

Anyone know, or am I just worrying over nothing.

I'm not really too bothered if the insurance covered me for every accessory in the event of theft really as most of them I picked up at bargain prices anyway, and would just be happy with the value of the bike back so I could get another one, but I wouldn't like to find that I was riding around with some change to the bike that would render my policy invalid should the worst happen.

Anyone else with these cans, and what did you list them as?

Many insurers, faced with damage claim, will offer an alternative exhaust to the original - and possibly even offer some cash back too.

Original exhaust are not only frighteningly heavy bit also horrendously expensive, so offering an Venom is a cheap alternative. They could hardly charge you more on top.

Re: Are motad venom cans performance enhancing?

Thanks for your help Whealie That seems like a good way to look at it. Those were all reasons I wanted a venom over the original in the first place (plus that it should last without rusting ofcourse unlike the one I replaced).

It's only third party fire and theft at the moment (might look at upgrading it to fully comp later when I get paid though if it's possible to do that at that stage), so the accidental damage thing I'm not too worried about. Even with fully comp I'd be unlikely to make a claim and would just fix it myself in that case.

I was more concerned with what would happen if I got into some bump then found that the insurer questioned the exhaust not being listed as a power enhancing or as a modification to the makers specification (as the broker had answered 'no' to that question on the policy), then found myself completely uninsured.

I got an email back from venom confirming that it's designed as a direct replacement only in stainless steel, and the real saving would be in weight only. So I think I should be OK (and if I'm not then at least I've got the email from the broker confirming that it didn't need to be listed to back me up in the worst case - hopefully that would be enough).
