    bar risers and my insurance

I bought a set of bar risers for my transalp and, being a goody 2 shoes, I rang my insurers to see what they had to say.
I fully expected them so say that they weren't any sort of issue at all.
But, they said that they would be OK but only if fitted by a 'dealer' and they would need to see proof.
This seems rather extreme to me for what is a 10 minute job.
    Anyone else had this response?

    My thoughts exactly.
I certainly won't be renewing with them next year.

NIG, which is part of the RBS group I believe.
I suspect if you've already got accessories like risers fitted, they'd be OK with them when you first take out a policy.

I had always thought the insurers were only sensitive about performance enhancing mods or mods which impact the safety of the bike. I guess their stand point will be that they should be the judge of that, hence they want riders to tell them of any mods.

These forums are full of bikers who make mods to their machines. I wonder if they all inform their insurers. I think I know the answer

Quality piece of info that. Absolutely not a problem with every insurer and broker I have asked, so I may put this to to NIG.

The agent was the AA but they spoke to NIG whilst I was on the phone.
I wonder if the AA guy didnt describe the mod accurately to the NIG guy?
Perhaps I should try again and hope I get a different rep.

Possibly the NIG people had a vision of you putting on errfing great apehangers and pretending to be an extra from Easy Rider?

Re: bar risers and my insurance

In my opinion this is very unusual. However, I am not going to point the finger at either the AA or NIG as it is probably more to do with the relationship between the two.

We have a fantastic relationship with NIG and as a result have preferential premiums and terms that other brokers will not have. For example, we can offer Comprehensive riding of other bikes instead of the usual Third Party Only.

With a NIG policy through us, we would not ask for evidence of professional fitment on this modifications and would not impose a load, the same for:

    Dynojet 1
    Exhaust (up to 5% increase)
    Braided hoses

(The list goes on, ,but you get what I'm saying.....)
