    Travel insurance question

I used to have the Post Office policy, but my current account with Lloyds has a travel insurance policy (underwritten by Axa) thrown in.

    The General Exclusions bit says:

General exclusions relating to all sections of the policy.
We will not pay for claims arising directly or indirectly from:

    6. Your engagement in or practice of the following, unless You have received Our prior agreement in writing: manual work in connection with a profession business or trade, professional entertainment, flying except as a fare paying passenger in a fully-licensed passenger-carrying aircraft, the use of a moped, motorcycle, car, van, lorry or similar motorised vehicle unless a full United Kingdom driving licence is held permitting the use of such vehicles in the United Kingdom and in the case of a moped or motorcycle, You and Your passenger are wearing a helmet.

I take this to mean that I'd need a letter of confirmation from Axa/Lloyds for use while motorcycling abroad?

    Re: Travel insurance question

I have Lloyds travel insurance the same as you and I phoned to ask this question. I was told that provided I am legally allowed to ride the bike here and have valid insurance the travel cover would be the same as if I were driving a car in Europe.

Phone and check but I think you'll find your covered

Check the small print for cc limitations as well though, I had a similar policy a few years back which had a 125cc limit hidden in the really really small print - not in with the rest of the motorbike spiel like you'd expect.

    Re: Travel insurance question

My personal travel insurance is with BUPA.

This is definitely European (possibly worldwide I can't remember) and DOES cover riding a motorcycle, although it does specify the wearing of full motorcycle protection and you must be travelling on a designated road (i.e shown on a map)

    Re: Travel insurance question

My "free" policy via Alliance & Leicester and Fortis Insurance has wording similar to Samwises's AND a 125 limitation. When I phoned them about this they said it only applied to bikes hired while abroad. If I took my own bike and was properly licensed and insured etc then I was covered. I do think the policy wording could be clearer though - which I told them but i doubt they took any notice of.

Bikesafe cleared this one up earlier. If you have a legal right to be there because it is a byway, then you are insured.

Persumably you must be insured because the laws of the road apply.

If anybody's policy workding says the policy excludes riding bikes over 125, which is the standard exclusion, I'd ask for confirmation that you are covered in writing. I even asked or confirmation for my new policy because no such exclusion exists.

That's OK for the UK, but is there such a thing as a byeway in other countries? I don't know.

"On a road marked on a map", was OK with me, especially as the tracks we were travelling on in the Pyrenees were marked on the maps we were using.
