Interesting, leave your bike in your own shed with tax and still get nicked

What right have the goverment got to tell me what I do on my own property!??

This smacks of an orwellian state to me, a tightly controlled society where we are being constantly watched!

    Makes my blood boil!

    another knob law then.
although, who leaves an unused car or bike on their property with tax on it? if you know your not going to use it for a while, (perhaps because the insurance has run out?) cash the tax in even if theres only one full month left on it, and SORN the vehicle. you dont have to wait until the tax period is up.

why give that c**ks****r gordon brown money for NOT using his roads?

It is best to keep the bike insured even if it is SORN.
If someone breaks in and steals it you will lose the bike and be unable to claim on insurance so be out of pocket.
A mate at work has a mint CB 400/4 and it costs him £30 a year for insurance , the bike has been SORNed or the last 5 years.

I have mixed views on this, on the one hand, great keep the uninsured twats off the road. After all no insurance tends to go with no tax, no licence, no MOT and criminal activity. Could the police trace cars used by these twats - nope, so a useless law that will end up harassing the careless innocent. Also my car is my possession, why do I have to buy insurance for it if I am not exposing any third party or anyone's property to any risk whatsoever, exactly what service would I be buying. If this becomes law the insurance for SORN'd car should be £0.00 as there are no risks being covered.

    except fire and theft?

it doesnt say you MUST have insurance, it says if you dont have insurance you MUST SORN it, which makes sense but wont do a damn thing about uninsured drivers.
anyone caught actually driving illegally except within the limits should have the vehicle taken off them and crushed, simple as that, no arguement. anyone who causes an accident while driving like that should automatically have their penalties tripled and anyone who kills someone should be done for murder because they knew they shouldnt be driving and the victim would be ok if they had stuck to the law.
we all dont like how expensive tax and insurance is these days but its got to be payed, simple as that. if its a problem get a C90 or a diesel car with £35 a year tax. i pay for using my bikes and cars and ive no sympathy for anyone who doesnt. theres no excuse because you get reminders in plenty of time and can even do the lot online in minutes these days. if you cant afford the insurance till payday then bloody cycle to work till payday. and dont buy anything with less than 2 months tax on it because that could be how long it takes the DVLA to send you the new V5 you need to retax.

You can't buy just "fire and theft" on a motor policy it has to be TPF&T. Its the 3rd party bit that you are required to have by law.

I initially read the article wrongly. I thought it had linked ownership to insurnance, but it doesn't it links tax to insurance ie it becomes illegal to have tax on a vehicle without also insuring it, and I guess by insure it means have a recognised motor policy that provides at least the minimum legal cover - which I think covers injury to 3rd parties only but not their property. I can see where this will lead - the state will provide the minimum level of insurance as part of the road tax - but I bet our insurance premiums don't come down.
