Why do you need to announce accessories to insurers? I mean, why do heated grips, a top box, or crash bars change my insurance premium? They're not more likely to result in my bike being stolen or me crashing, so what's the logic?

My insurance cover gave me £1000 of pounds of accessories covers when i took the policy. The boxes they said were fixed to the bikeso didnt need to include them on that bit but i declared everything else and the sat-nav sent them photo's of everything on the bike aswell so they know what is on it

Accessories can add to the value of the bike if stolen. Crashbars can reduce the cost of repair to plastics so are of benefit.
The main reason though is the total value that they need to cover.
some insurance companies (carole nash) will take the oppertunity to rip you off and increase your premium if you add crash bungs, ebike will give you a discount. I always declare everything, just to ensure it doesnt give them a way of wriggling out of paying out in the event of a sh1tcart..... Ebike are very good as they will insure race exhausts without any quibbles. renewal this year is £350 for my (moddified) hayabusa, xt660z tenere, xtz750 super tenere and ktm 250 plus i have a £40 discount voucher - this is with everything declared. some paintwork and accessories do make the bike more nickable or increase performance which is why you need to declare them
Caffrey - The greatest dog in the world.
Just had a thought- should I have told them about the tyres? They're not standard (and in which case, surely practically everyone has a modification?)
