    KLR 250 Head Job

Number 1 son had a bit of oil blowing from his cam cover yesterday . Got the bike home in the back of the car (Citroen Berlingo ) last night and lifted the cover today. Here's what I found (sorry for the out of focus shots, wifes camera doesn't do close-ups very well!):

    Overview

    Close up inlet cam bearings

    Cam and caps

    Ouch!

Looking at on-line fiches, it would appear that the bearings are of a piece with the head, if so it's a new head for the lad and maybe a new cam to boot, although it might be salvageable.

Anyone got a spare KLR250D8 head down the back of the settee? Or know of anyone that can recondition this to a high standard?

    Anything at all ........................... ?

Told him he should've got a Honda!

Despite your poor photo technique they look like "white metal" bearings, you should be able to remove them although they may need to be machined out, once out you can fit new bearings, if there's any slack in the fit use Loctite "bearing fit" to help hold them in place but don't get any on the inner surface of the bearing

I had the same on my very old CB750 way back in 1980-something due to oil starvation so check the oilways before re-assembly.

p.s. try DK Motorcycles for new or used spares, they do mail order and if required I can call in and check any used bits for you http://www.dkmotorcycles.co.uk/dkonline/home/ best to phone and ask, the website can be a bit pants.

    Hi,

Came across this post whilst searching the web - I've got exactly the same problem. How did you get it sorted in the end? I'm scouring the breakers for a new head & cams at the moment but was wondering if a rebuild is possible?

    Cheers,

    Chalky

Got a complete engine off ebay for less than the price of a new head, then just used the head from it as the rest of the mill in the bike was at much lower mileage.

Bike ran like a dream after that, now sold to a local bloke to make room in the Shed for my next project, a 1988 XBR500 for low-down scratching when I need a break from looking over the hedges on Miss Whiplash.

    Hope you get it sorted.

    Cool,

I've found a breakers that has a head & cams, just awaiting confirmation that they're not in the same condition!!

Wasn't sure if a rebuild was feasable, I think this is the cheaper option.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Chalky
