    GPz900R Rebuild

    Hi guys,

I've had my GPz900R (Katsumi) since 2000 when I bought it without TAX/MOT.. Kept it running since then and she's never really let me down...

Well she's starting to look old and tired but I can't bear to part with her. So I've been telling myself for a bit that I'm gonna strip her down and rebuild her. I'm not though bothered to keep her standard and might as well update her a bit

So my plan is to work on her when I have time (will probably be a slow process) and to make the following mods to her.
    1. Totall stripdown to frame and then repaint frame in white etch prime then with a thick clear laquer coating so she stays slightly off-white (possibly the same effect on the wheels)
    2. Total rebuild of the engine perhaps overbore her or get a 1000Rx top end.
    3. Carb will be thrown away and I'll megasquirt/spark her with a fully programmable capability and possible multiple on the fly maps.
    4. Total redesign of the plastics, round them off a bit so it doesn;t look so angular
    5. New headlight system with HID
    6. All other lights changed to LED and moulded into the bodywork
    7. New digital dash with possibly a small GPS built in again moulded into the dash
    8. Base soft pink paint job with black/silver camoflauge pattern for all the plastics
    9. All other metal bits zinc plated
    10. Not sure yet about the exhaust but possibly a 4 into 1 with a pink camo shroud as the EFI system and pod filters should cope well without any flatspots
    11. Replace the old one pot front brakes (got a set of 4 pot brembo's in the workshop somewhere)
    12. Refurb loom and add new sections for example a comms unit

Yep sounds mad but then when have you ever known me not to be a little crazy!!!

Anyway just about to take some pics of her as she is now and if the weather holds tomorrow might actually start stripping her down. The plan is to document what's happening in this thread for anyone interested.

**Updated list as I forgot about the brakes

Here's a start picture to show you the sorry state she's in now (mirrors were removed to get it into the garden from the workshop)

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

    Re: GPz900R Rebuild

I got the GPz900R as from being 15 when they first came out I thought WOW!!! Then a couple of years later I sat in the cinema watching Top-Gun and again thought WOW.. Then when I was a courier on a CX500 a friend had a red/black one and I just loved it..

In 2000 I'd not long moved down to London, was riding a CB500 that belonged to the boss at work and thought that I might as well get something of my own again after I had a major crash on a VF750FD a year back.. went looking in Colins Colins in Harrow (I lived in Harlington at the time) and saw my baby... only had 15K on the clock and was a 1989 A6 model.. They wanted £1600 and for that they'd put an MOT on it, I haggled it down to £1150 without an MOT (it flew through with minimal work) and I've never looked back...

The work I want to do is hopefully to get her back on the road for our tenth anniversary (June 2010)

I don't mean performance, it's just something else I can't quite put my finger on. The 1000RX (?) and then original ZX10 that came out after the 900R was when they stopped floating my boat if you like.

It doesn't help I've just watched 'Stone' on DVD after 25 years of trying to get a copy (used to watch it on VHS from a video rental place) which is full of Z900s and was filmed in 74 accoriding to the back of the box.

There is a law concerning GPz's - they should be RED, not PINK, but each to thier own I guess.
