    KMX 125- any good?

Hi all, who has any experience of these, and how are they (common probs, home maint, road and off road manners) one going cheap locally and wondering do I have a dab or steer well clear? It will be for gentle lanes, so learner friendly/dropable.
No tax (£16) or MoT (£??) and will be daytime only (another Q how easy to fit a fet switches and lights etc?)

or do I keep on looking (It's ad for £300 inc a couple of buckets of bits)

Bear in mind I'm NOT small or light, can I do this-

    Thanks

The 200 would have been a better bet. I had one for ages and it was a hoot, the front wheel just wouldn't stay on the ground.

I sold it to a mate for green laning, he's a big lad and found it OK but did find it couldn't keep up with the 4 strokes on steep climbs.

I did use a 125 to take my test on and it was good but nowhere near as quick as the 200 and I suspect would struggle off road with a larger person on board

I've had two. The full power ones kick out 23 bhp or something. Big change on the usual 12. I think they're great fun. Very light and pretty damn quick.

The exhausts break at the mount near the tank. They all do it and not really a problem. I ragged the tits off mine and had no problems. Last one used to get held at an indicated 90 on the M4 and refused to blow up.

I was 10 stone when I had one, so can't comment on how it handles weight.

    Thanks for mentioning that ECA!

If you don't mind the smell of 2 stroke, then I would say give it a go. They are a lot of fun and easy to maintain.

Things to look out for, soft rear suspension and check compression, if the piston rings go and the barrel gets scored, it has to be sent off and re-plated (they can not be bored out).

Other than that, they're great fun off road, easy to pick up if you drop it and there are loads of spares on ebay or wemoto.com

    Enjoy

    Re: KMX 125- any good?

Thanks for that everyone, the bloke said it is running rough at the moment, but I'd buying it as a project (he said the spares inc a load of new gaskets and seals not to mention spare wheels, at least half an engine etc) and I was pootling down some lanes (tarmac) on Toni and my ave speed is only 20mph, so a wee bimble machine is just what I'm after. esp if I can drop it and not burst into tears (of £20 notes)
I think I'll chase the fella, for £300 I can't see me losing out on this bargain bucket.

    for £300 you can't lose,

I did look at getting another KMX200 a while back and they were going for over £1000, beginning to wish I'd never sold mine as i only got £400 about 6 years ago

That is good to know. I bought a KMX 200 in 2009 to allow me to do some proper trail riding, a fully refurbed project bike, totally rebuilt engine, shotblast and painted frame etc etc. Tons of spares, just needed the fuelling sorting as the bike started fine, ran fine, then started to rev uncontrollably as though the cable was stuck. That or a pin hole in the induction hose. Chain was not wunnerful, but C&S are cheap enough for a small bike

I will not ride it again as my wonky knees stop me riding a "proper" bike nowadays which is why my TA went a month or so ago I'll get it up on ebay when I get around to it sometime....

    Re: KMX 125- any good?

I had a kmx125 for a few years. I bought it to commute on after I'd had to sell my Super Tenere when we needed the deposit for a house! The last 2 stroke trail bike that I'd owned was a Yamaha DT175. When I first got on the kmx I couldn't believe it! There was no comparison. It absolutely flew! It was a bit tatty, but the motor was something else. I remember having 85mph out of it and it honestly seemed like it would do more. Unfortunately I neglected it over the years and had get a replacement carb as stale petrol had gummed it up beyond repair. Eventually the kips valve stopped working. It got left in a wet leaky garage for a while and the brakes seized and it generally became a complete restoration project. With no spare time and needing the space I sold it on eBay about 4 years ago for £400!
Now with 2 teenagers I started looking for another. Earlier this year I purchased a non road legal kmx200. All that fun's come straight back except with more power. Think I'll look after this one & keep it!
General maintenance-wise, my 125 got through 3 expansion pipes. I think this was probably down to winter riding. It used to go through a lot of flasher units as well.
