I had a cunning plan and it worked based upon a good training run up to Doune a few weeks earlier, just North of Stirling (524 miles in 9.5 hours with stops, av 55mph). By the way, this is (was) the first long distance ride for me so I had to rely on similar past experiences of duration events, but as every event is different, this is certainly an adventure.
My aim was to better 16.5 hours averaging just over 50mph with as few petrol stops as possible (4). At each petrol stop, fuel, food and empty the water tank. I broke the journey into three distinct chunks (sorry Jon). JOG/Inverness to Abington Services M74, Abington to Keele Services, and Keele to Exeter/Lands End. At every stop I was up to forty minutes ahead of schedule until leaving Exeter for LE. Then the fog and mist reduced me to 35/40 mph, but I still arrived ahead of schedule by a few minutes. Average speed turned out to be 53mph and by the time I had arrived back home (good ride up on Monday) I had a round trip of 1952 miles, av 82mpg!
It was great meeting all the riders, speaking to Sharri with my progress and above all the banter. I spent a day on Orkney (19th) which took me back 30 years when I worked there commissioning microwave telephone links for the Post Office. Apart from Faulty Towers, it was a Great Adventure and the organising team need to be congratulated for a FAB ride. Where's the next one?
