I felt the same when I did Enduroafrica. It took me 2 years to raise £2000 and then I had to put the remaining £3000 on the mortgage to take part. I paid the minimum needed for entry, but there were people I rode with who had given 10's of thousands (bear in mind that there was at least 1 rock star, 1 ex moto gp racer and 1 millionaire on the trip with me).
A group who raise for charity are so much more than the sum of their individual donations. There is the support you give to the other participants before and during the event, the awareness you raise for the charity concerned and, not to be underestimated, the inspiration that your taking part in such an event gives to other people.
I know of at least 5 other people who were directly inspired by my charity trip to take part in fundraising events of their own for different charities.
It's ok to be a small star sometimes, we cannot all be supanovas!
