To be honest, can't imagine they're actually worth wasting the time thinking about.

What's the benefit? My (non-magnetic one) screws in within a few seconds. Could I knock a second or two off with a magnetic one?

Or do they hold some other mystical properties? Attracting small metal fragments from the oil perhaps, keeping the engine cleaner?

I guess, if they cost the same and you need a new one, go for it!

Lol yeah, the point is to attract little metal bits and bobs swirling around in the oil and make it less likely to cause abrasions to the innards.

They screw in like a regualar one

I guess it must be worthwhile then. I must say tho', with all the bikes I have had, I have never come across 'iron filings' in the oil when doing a change. But then again, I have always changed the oil very often, well in advance of the recommended intervals.

If there were any shards big enough to cause engine damage I would be very concerned. perhaps it's worth the extra few quid for peace of mind?

on the MX bikes we used to drill out the middle of the sump bung a little and then bond in a magnet, that way the **** is removed when you drain the oil.

Many comppoents are alloy, so material from damaged cylinder bores etc will not be affected by the magnet.

I alway's drill into the sump plug and araldite a small magnet in there.

And yes they do gather tiny filings, anywhere that you have gears you'll have filings in the oil no matter how new/old the bike is or how often you change the oil.

Erm magnetic sump screw methinks (if you somehow fit a nut the oil will run out the hole in the middle ).

These come up on ebay regularly, don't cost much and are supposed to help, any bits magnetic or otherwise should get trapped in the filter, but if this stops them getting that far then fine.

I think he meant Aluminium, lots of people call this alloy, whereas all the metals in the engine are one sort of alloy or another, unless you have pig iron pistons

p.s pistons, cylinder liners, gears, bearings, etc are all made from magnetic alloys, it's only stainless steel alloys that aren't magnetic and even then it depends on the grade (stick a magnet on your kitchen sink/ cutlery).
