    Number plate sizes

    Hi,

What's the script with size of number plate.

    I am planning reducing my 9 x 6 1/2 inch number plate to 9 x 4 inch.
I think the 9 x 4 is illegal, but have any of you guys put a small plate on , and if so, have you had any probs with the officers of the law / mot 's etc.

Please now , no jokes about size that matters !!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Number plate sizes

THE INFO BELOW WAS LIFTED FROM A POST MADE ON THE ESSEX BIKER WEBSITE.

It has been subject to many threads and with no prejudice to anyone, here are the legal requirements of a bike number plate.

Therefore as already mentioned in other threads if you decide to adjust your plate outside of the guidelines then you do so at your own risk...

    Letter height - 64mm
    Letter Width - 44mm
    Letter thickness 10mm
    Spacing - 10mm
    Group Space - 30mm
    Top Margin - 25mm
    Side Margin - 25mm
Font should comply with BS AU 145d (these templates are held by dealerships and most sign makers)

Group Spacing refers to the blocks of letters and numbers within the first and second part of your registration. Top and side Margin is the space between the outside of the plate and the start of the letters/numbers.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

More or less wot Yen says.

Check the DVLA website for bike plate sizes.

Plates MUST show the BS number AS WELL AS the manufacturer`s details.

Prior to 2001 you can have a three row plate.

After 2001 only two row plates are legal.

Single row have never actually been legal for bikes.

Regarding illegal plates, bear in mind that if you`re done more than a couple of times, the DVLA may withdraw your registration.

    Re: Number plate sizes

    My take on this is:

Totally legal plate is 9"x7", possibly with a border round the edge and a dealer's logo at the bottom.

I tend to go for a "clean" looking 8"x6", no logos, no borders, no slogans. Type ends up being about the same size, still enough gap around the edges to make the type perfectly visible, and I go for a font that is good and thick, regular and very legible. Never had any problem with the boys in blue.

Anything much smaller and the type has to be smaller or the gap round the edges/between the letters has to get smaller and it gets harder to read. Then you're on shaky ground as the whole point of the plate is to be legible. If it's not, the old bill will not take kindly to it. The TL came with a 7"x5" (so narrower than the rear tyre) which looked silly and was a lot more likely to cause trouble, so it got swapped straight off.

My AT still has the original 9"x7" on it for the moment, you can see the difference between that and the 8"x6" on my TL here:

On second thoughts, perhaps not the best example cos the TL's further away...

    Thanks for that guys,

Take your advice DJ, just think the @ is a bit heavy looking at the back with the standard size plate quite a bit lower than the seat height.

    Cheers

Thanks Guys, I was wondering about this myself, for when I get ELLA back together.

DJ, you had me worried when I opened the jpeg entitled "bathtime", wasn't sure what it was gonna be

    Re: Number plate sizes

number plate size and information on it eg. the plate makers details and the BS code are infact part of the MOT, its also a legal requirement that the plate is the legal size OR BIGGER but not smaller regardless of how many characters the plate displays.

thanks to the police's number plate recog system these rules are being applied more and more stringently, remember the ANR ( thats in car, specs, and new cameras) system will also tell the police if your plate is not legal - this can even be as strict as the angle or tilt on the plate ( as many land rover owners with stuck on plates on the top of the bonnet are now finding out!)

It's all getting a bit Orwellian for me, still at least sometime soon it may stop plonkers defacing their reg plate to make it look almost like their pet dogs name

(though I do have a deep, dark desire to get a WTF reg for my bike )
