    Side pannier weight capacity

I'd be interested to hear from those who I know use their bikes ( particularly Transalp's) as 'work-horses' what sort of weight capacity you extend to in your side panniers ?

I see that the ad's for the Givi's recommend 10Kg ? I assume that's their recommended carrying weight rather than 'what they weigh'....but not quite sure. There's a 'hare-brained' reason for asking & it has 4 legs & hates being left out ( but it's too big for a 'top' mounted box).

The riding will be un-adventurous performance wise & I'd have to 'mod' a second hand box....probably alloy, but am not sure if it is a non-starter....+ have to provide a 'dummy' box with 'ballast' on the "other" side, looking at about 25 - 30 kg each side.

Ok,......so it's a silly idea, but sometimes the heart rule's the head !?

As with all things slightly 'barmy' ....there are a couple of designs which appear quite prevalent in the States....one is like a high sided Dog Bed affair which sits on, or behind the pillion seat, but is more suited to 'cruisers' & the other is a very smart 'pod' style box more akin to a Top Box with a grid at the front, but it's a bit small.
I've seen a picture on a site...can't recall which...British bike's I expect, with a Spaniel in an un-modded side pannier....my beast is a bit bigger than a Spaniel, but narrow, so not beyond all reason.

The weight per se shouldn't be a problem for the bike, seeing as you can ride 2 up...

Might have to do some hefty reinforcements on the rear subframe and rack though.

And indeed you want ballast on the other side, I've once ridden a mile with 15 kg of groceries in one pannier, and a big box full of mostly packing peanuts in th'other. Made for some funny handling, left hand corners were a riot though.
