    Shocker!

Hey Guys, After my spain trip i realised i really do need to up grade my suspention (as talk about in an eariler post) and Mrs.X has given me the Green light (not the £££) but the the light.. So once I save up the 6-800£ I want to get it done.. yes i said get it done.. I recon with something like this having a pro set it up for you will save lots of time and BS. I know I could physically bolt in the rear unit and slip in the front springs. but it is all the rest. Getting the correct spring and compression rations.. Any way I have decided to go Ohlins as my top choice but Wp is a close second.... so what i want to know is

Does anyone (Kymmy/Jenna) know of a good suspention shop. Harrisons was claimed to be the best but now they no longer sell to the public. K-Tech is the cheapest i have found for ohlins, but do not do set ups.. Full Travel seems like a good bet (they are WP) and will do set up.. but as I said WP in in 2nd place.. I dont really care about travel distance but the further it is a way from brum this bigger deal it becomes to leave the bike there...

So Comments suggestions.. No do it your selfs...

    What about Dave Lambeth?
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Re: Shocker!

I've just put the Ohlins #HO645, Type 46HRCS on my @, and even though I haven't altered it from the 'standard' out of the box factory setting, WOW what a noticeable difference.

Even though the unit comes with 'Setting Up Your Bike' and 'Tuning The Suspension' instructions, I know my own limitations and I'm not comfortable enough to feel confident in doing it myself so I'm having it setup for me by Crescent Suzuki (they run the BSB Rizla Suzuki Team, so I reckon they should know a thing or two about setting up suspension).

The Ohlins website points to Harris Products as the main UK Importer, then when you browse Harris's website they list authorised Ohlins Service Centre specialists nationally, and the closest to me was Crescent.

I phoned them first and had a chat with one of the engineers at their Performance Centre in Verwood - made me feel very comfortable about the fact that I was bringing a 'non-race bike' to them for setup.

So I'm booked in on 7th April - and we'll see how much better it can get.

Oh - and Dave Lambeth is the accepted specialist for the Yamaha XT600 Tenere. He's based in Sussex - details on his website.

    Hey Storm:
    Thanks for all that..
That is the ohlins unit i decided to go with as well. How did you decide on spring strengh? K-tech is the guys closest to me (got them from the harris website). but i have a few other options. as you are booked in so soon Ill wait and see how you go and may just make the trip down to Cressent (let them make the mistakes on your bike ).

Big question is did the hydraulic pre-load adjuster cable (or is it tubing) come long enough to plce it where you did or did you have to change it over. Any issues with the install? Cus that is a great place for it. Aslo did you do front progressive springs as well?

    Re: Shocker!

Hey Xander - I think our @'s were separated at birth - they're becoming more like each other all the time

The remote pre-load adjuster hose is standard and fits as specified in the Installation manual. Its definitely hydraulic so it must be hose (it's definitely not cable). The only difference is that because I have a Remus can on it's Remus mounting, I drilled a hole to accept the Ohlins bracket. The bracket mounts onto the back of the original exhaust hangar if the original silencer is used.

This Ohlins unit is specific to the Africa Twin so it doesn't need lengthening at all.

Installation is easy - the hardest part was getting the bike up high enough as with the new shock the swingarm is a lot harder to move to get the wheel back in when it's on the centre stand (I just added a couple bloacks of wood under the centre stand to gain the extra height.) The shock is a straight bolt in, the compression damping piston is a direct replacement for the OE one, same fitment, the only decision I had to make was the best routing for the pre-load tube.

I haven't changed the front springs as I want to ride the bike a bit before I decide if I want/need to upgrade the front.

I'll keep you posted on how the setup goes with Crescent - your more than welcome to come along and see how it's done they reckon an hour at the most. (Once we understand what's happening, might save you having to pay someone..........)

You can download the Installation Manual and basic Suspension Set-Up instructions from the Ohlins website.

Here's a photo of how the @ sits now it's on it's shiny new shocker
