    Dry bags

I'm off to Italy in July and I'm looking for a dry bag with handles that I can strap to the back of the bike. I have a top box but want I to travel light. Does anyone know of a dry bag with handles. All the ones I've seen don't have 'em.

    Cheers
    Rob

    Re: Dry bags

I have a Hein Gericke bag that has one central handle, cost about a tenner.

Have you looked at Ortlieb bags, more expensive but good quality, traveldri do them.

Hein gericke do a 60litre luggage roll made out of tarpolin type material. Very waterproof, strong and less than 20 quid

    Re: Dry bags

I've been looking into drybags, too. At a price, the best bike specific ones I've found are made by Helen2Wheels in the US, linky: http://www.helen2wheels.com/

However, there are lots of inexpensive heavy duty roll-top type drybags on fleabay, in a variety of sizes & colours. Problem is, none of them have tie-down loops. I'm looking into the possibility of sticking on my own loops, using strips of dry-suit repair fabric and adhesive. Should be OK, since the loops don't actually have to support the weight of the whole bag, just stop it from moving.

    Anyone tried owt similar?

    Re: Dry bags

Whats wrong with some medium strength tie downs???. Wilco's and other similar stores sell em for a couple of quid for 2 or ratchet strap types 3 for about 6 quid. I use the type with the spung tooth type blade that bites into nylon strap. Work a treat, not expensive. Tried ratchet straps and yes they are good, but they are a faff and its too easy to crush your kit or bend metalwork on your bike.

I've got a drybag I picked up in Amsterdam years ago for a tenner, just a simple rolltop and it's never let in a leak. A bungee net and a bungee or two mean it's always been totally secure, and I've carried some heavy stuff in it on fairly rough ground.

Don't get too fixated about carry handles. They will restrict your choice and you may find you never need them. A cargo net should hold it in place easily. After all, on a bike your luggage gets little side-to-side pressure; mostly up-down over bumps and fore-aft under accelleratin and braking.

    Re: Dry bags

Why carry handles? Why dry bag?

    1. If the weatherproofing of a dry bag is essential, and I agree that it is, then buy an "ordinary" rolltop dry bag.

    2. If you need, really need, carry handles, put the dry bag inside a cheap holdall-with-handles. It will slow down access to the dry bag, but then the speed of access into roll-top cylindrical "sausage" dry bags is very slow anyway.

When the day comes that the whole lot falls off the bike, gets coated with dirt and filth, or whatever, the cheap outer bag will protect the must-not-puncture-it dry bag.

After the bike tour you get to have 2 pieces of luggage instead of one (although you may decide this is a disadvantage rather than an advantage).
