Can anyone tell me what is the point of those motocross helmets with the chinguard sticking out like that?
There must be a reason -what is it? I'm f***ed if I know....

My guess - to protect ones chin![]()
If youve ever seen an mx race youll have seen the amount of stones and mud that get fired up into the face of any unfortunate rider following behind - ouch !
Oh and if you did crash on an mx bike (or an adventure bike come to think of it) with no chinguard the results dont bear thinking about - yikes!

I use mine to push aside the brambles that grow across the local green lanes. The peak keeps the sun out of my eyes in the morning/evening.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.
1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
I use one most of the time in preferance to a visored full face. With goggles on it allows more air flow, so cooler, easier access for drinks tube and jelly babies, visor keeps the worst of the roost from hitting my face, and the pointy chin bit stops the rest, and I can still see where I'm going (most of the time.)
And here was silly old git me thinking it was so pipe smokers could ride their bikes and puff on the rough shag!!!!!![]()
They protrude further than normal to allow better air flow when the rider gets short of breath, e.g. exertion of riding rough terrain. They don't work so well at motorway speeds especially when you look over your shoulder and find the air drag is stronger than your neck muscles so you can't face forwards again!!

There is a fine line between numerator and denominator.

All wrong it is to identify the front side of the lid so we don't stick them on backwards![]()

I know what you`re on about![]()
Fecking chinguards that cover your headlight !!
The answers are above.....remember that MX lids are just that...MX lids.
They`re not actually road going helmets.
Paradoxically, when I`m not on my Urals and am on my GS`s I wear a Bell Moto 6 which is an MX lid and has a close fitting chinguard.
Doesn't this look better hanging off you mirrors than a standard dome????![]()

Also If like me you have crowns there's less chance of knocking them out during a tumble

Thanks one and all - to sum up all the answers - the pointy helmet is a load of bollocks, and just something else for people to buy......
