    Time to Upgrade Garmin GPSv

It's about time I upgraded my Garmin GPSV - it's a great bit of kit, but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by the refresh rate when in a strange city and need quick turn by turn directions.......

I don't want to spend a fortune, so it's gonna have to be a s/h unit.

I'd like to get a decent amount of maps loaded.

I like the 2610, but is it a vast improvement of the SPIII?

or any other suggestions?, and what should I be looking for?

Yeah, if you buy anything but a Zumo550 you're mad!

Get yourself to Poole tonight and you can have a look at mine

    Hi,

I'm looking at this Road Angel 7000 the reason being it works with memory map, so it you are riding down a trail just load up the OS 1:25k, aerial view or whatever and away you go, It's waterproof, can be used for walking and on the pushbike as well. Not sure if you can download routes to it like you can with the Garmin 2610 though.

I've just stuck my Garmin Nuvi 300 on flea bay to help fund one!

Unfortunately I'm pre-booked for a curry with the outlaws this evening - but I'll hopefully hook up with you next week down on the Quay

Re: Time to Upgrade Garmin GPSv

I'm only really planning on using the GPS for point to point address trips, as I still enjoy the planning and excitement of 'old school' navigation, which I think is part & parcel of enjoying touring. I like holding and looking at the map (I know it just sounds wrong ) as it gives an overall picture of where you are and where your destination is. With a GPS - if it suddenly stopped working you wouldn't really know where you were unless you resorted to a paper map.

I know this sounds quite sad - but I figure the human race mapped the globe pretty well and managed to get around quite well before the advent of GPS.........it's a great tool, but it doesn't rule my riding.

No, I totally agree with you, you can't beat a map. Even on the New Forest rideout I still had OS 022 in my tank bag.

Didn't do such a great job of recording the route as the Garmin though

I think the 2610 is much better as it has the touch screen etc, and it is a much quicker unit. My brother has it and me the SPIII and mine takes about 10 times longer to make a route. My ony problem is that it needs a power supply and can't be used off the bike unless it plugged into the mains.

I got lucky - got a Garmin 2820 for under 400 euro from a BMW rider who upgraded his GS1150 (he fitted GPS) to a GS1200 (came with built in GPS). So the GS rider Buy&Sell section is a good place to look, or eBAY. 2820 is also battery free , but since I'm only likely to use it on bike / in car its not a problem

The 2610 is certainly a better buy than the SPIII purely because of calculation speed. I find my SPIII sometimes slower than the old GPS V
