    TomTom/Garmin/Sat Nav....help!

    Hello Folks.

As it's now above 8 degrees Celcisus, I am assuming its' summer, although judging by last weekend, you wouldn't have thought so.
Am thinking about a Sat Nav and I wondered if anyone had any ones they thought were particulalry good? I'll be planning mostly UK trips and pottering around London.

Just had a six week trip over to Oz. My God, they have some great places to ride over there (once you get out of Sydney, people drive like a-holes over there). When I win the Lottery I am going to ride from East to West Australia.

    Anyway, back to reality......

I use a Garmin i3 in a tank bag which works fine. Unit mod'ed to give audio output to Starcom system.

Saved two speeding tickets so far.

The i3 is cheep and chearfull but works well, downloadable POI makes it a very useful tool.

Ian S's Garmin is a fine cheaper unit for UK use, I'm using a PDA with TOMTOM software, works fine but needs a seperate sat reciever but the unit then doubles as a phone & MP3 and wireless notebook when abroad, cuts down on expensive clobber to take.

I have the TomTom Rider. It's pretty good, and ideal for what you say you want to use it for.

It has a few limitations though. It wont "remember" a route. So if you just go out for a nice long ride letting the roads take you wherever, you cant look back when you get home and see where you went or how far/fast/whatever that some other units allow. This is what I find most lacking and most annoying. However, it is just a software thing and I've spoken to TomTom who tell me this feature "may" be included in a future software update. We shall see.

The original mount (now superceded on the TT Rider II just launched) is pants. I've replaced mine with a locking Touratech one and that's great. The new TTR comes with a ram mount I think, and they've also updated/upgraded the bluetooth headset.

I have mine hooked up to a Starcom unit and the groovy thing about the TTR is that it "Pairs" with your Bluetooth enabled Mobile Phone and if you receive a call while you're riding, the callers name and number pops up on your TTR screen and presents you with a big "Answer" or "Reject" touch screen button and routes the call to your headset. You can also dial out as long as you're not moving!

Maps and instructions are clear and concise and it's all easily updateable/customiseable.

Imagine you'll be able to pick up second hand or old stock Version 1's fairly reasonably.

I've got a Garmin Zumo which I'm very pleased with. I haven't yet found anything I want it to do that it won't do. Think about what features you want and then choose the gps that gives you those features. For me that included:
    battery power
    usable in car
    routing on a pc
    waterproof

And I would say a Garmin Quest, does all the above and a little cheaper. Especially if you can get hold of a Quest 1

Like Matt I have the Zumo550, it's the dog's danglies. Excellent GPS as it has the sirf2 chipset, the satnav software is as capable as TomTom's if not more so, mp3 player, audio book reader, connects to your mobile via bluetooth.
