    Re: Waterproof electrical connectors

AMP (superseal) or sureseal are the only true waterproof connectors, been using both in motorsport for 15+ years.

you can buy amp from various places (RS components, BUT they are dear, Maplins, if they can be arsed to put them in the right stock bin!!) but i use the importers direct.. Tony James wiring components. This company makes the looms for most the F1, WRC, ToCCa, BSK etc etc teams so if they dont have it, its not worth knowing about... ring customer service ( probably get tony as its a small & friendly company!) and ask them whats there best advice, its free and bang on every time.

Sureseal (which we use on nearly all the 4x4 race and rally builds) are my favourite, two main plus's is no fancy tools needed to crimp (unlike amp plugs!) and the pins are robust enough to solider direct to for that 'your not going to piss me around feeling'... another plus is these plugs are rubber so dont crack (like amp!) and they are handed so you cannot connect them up wrong, lastly the pins are 'inserted' with a thin coat of grease which stops corrosion. For sureseal go to their website and 'request' a local dealer or buy through TJCW, RS, or trident at silverstone.

    AMP cat: http://catalog.tycoelectronics.com/T...7560&LG=1&I=13

or Via RS: your looking for product no's 282080-1 & 282104-1 for the 2 pin plugs and 183035/183025 plus 183036/183024 for the pins.

    lastly TJCW:http://www.tonyjames.co.uk/

    Re: Waterproof electrical connectors

I've got in stock sureseal 9 pin socket and plugs but 3 pin sockets, and 2 pin plugs i have sfa of the matching halves ... I also have the RS 372-232 GOLD Ecu male and female pins for the AMP plugs/sockets but i dont have spare plugs/sockets that are superseals all i have are the stock injector cap ones which arnt waterproof.

If your not despirate to do it this minute i can add to our next order whatever you want.

PS. should also mention that sureseals are also known as ITT Cannon connectors when ysed by the military for some daft reason.!

I have just got two male and female connectors like the ones you suggested but not be electrically minded, and in the absence of instructions can you advise me how to asemble and which bits you crimp and which bits you do not.

HEL/BMW sockets are smaller than cigarette lighter sockets, and you can use other accessories too. mine both come from vehicle wiring products and have waterproof sprung caps. i have one wired direct to the battery with a 10A fuse for the optimate and heavy duty gadgets like the TV, kettle or the airbed pump, and another on the dash with a 2A fuse wired in parallel with the heated grips to a switched live for gps etc.

Crimp the pins to the wires then insert them into the plug housing.
The number ONE thing to be aware of is make sure the wires match up on both plugs else they do not work and are a nightmare to fix.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: Waterproof electrical connectors

I actually managed to do it. I was concerned by the number of bits which looked as if they were involved in holding the pins in the plastic housing. Now all in need is a little junction box to run the lights of the wiring loam. All wires lined up too.

    Many thanks for your help.
