    Which gps system

Having had GPS in the car now for a couple of years i think the part of my brain that was once used to read maps and navigate has noe died.

So the answer is fit GPS to the TA, but which system ?

I'm sure lots of you guys/gals must use them so any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Tony.

There's a pretty good thing on the Wikki on this Tony:
    http://www.xrv.org.uk/wiki/index.php/GPS/SatNav
RD07a, reg in 2001, Black, heated grips, short screen, Scottoiler, Givi top box and panniers, DataTag, full Riky Cross crash bars, Baglux tank cover, Facet pump, mostly 200 miles to reserve and presently a lot happier since being loved up at Chad's hospital for sick ATs!

    Re: Which gps system

I've got a Garmin 2610 for the bike, it's OK but can be a bit clunky in comparison to the more modern devices, I don't find it that good to use, no full postcode lookup, however it is now a discontinued device.

What I've also purchased recently is a Pocket PC with inbuilt GPS. With this you can choose whatever SatNav software you want. I'm running Tom Tom 6. But where the device really wins you can also rum Memory Map on it. Using memory map you can load up OS maps, aerial views and so on, the device then shows your exact location on the OS map, great for green laning, walking etc. When you want to use it as SatNav just swap the memory card over and away you go. It's not water proof so you would need to get say an otter box or something for use on the bike.

being a PDA it's also got Wi-Fi, bluetooth and makes a pretty good media player and personal video player and so on.

The Road Angel 7000 SatNav device will also run Memory Map, this is a waterproof device suitable for car, bike and walking too. I was going to buy this but went for the PDA as it was a similar price.

As the PDA needs to be in a waterproof box on the bike it's not as easy to operate as a dedicated GPS device though.

I'm happy with the Garmin Quest cos it sits nicely above the clocks on my TA and when I eventually get V9 the coverage in Ireland is excellent..

I used a Garmin QUest for my 3,000 miles last week. Apart from a few blackspots it was brilliant, easy to see and very easy to use.

    Re: Which gps system

Think the first thing is to decide if you want a GPSr or a SatNav as there really arnt that many units out there that successfully combine both duties.

    We have:
SatNav, mobile phone based running TomTom and Route66
    SatNav, Pda based running TomTom
GPSr, Garmin eMap, used on the bike and as a handheld.
GPSr, Garmin 152, used in the vehicles

with all that i have to say not two of them work the same or do the same job, where they cross over they normally balls up ( eg ever tried getting an artic down a footpath! no?.. ummm well thanks to TomTom i have!).

Though she has forgotten her new toy of a Toughbook laptop which can interface with any of the above and has installed Garmin Mapsource, MS Mappoint and full UK memory Maps. All GPS capable.

    Re: Which gps system

As Jenna say's, decide exactly what you want out of a system, then find one that best fit's your needs.

I opted for a PDA with TomTom, works well as a sat nav, doubles up as a phone, MP3, mini computer etc and saves on expensive clobber and a plethora of chargers etc when on hol on the bike.

The only feature I'd like is a trackback feature (and altimeter!)
