    Side stand foot modification

    Hi all,
I want to weld (or get welded as i dont currently have a welder) on a larger foot for my Africa Twin side stand, What is the best size plate to get put on, so that it offers maximum support but does not interfere with the swing arm?

Also anyone know of a good welder in Birmingham UK?

mods: even though this is a AT specific question, i posted it here because the answers may have wider interest (as many people may way to add the bigger footing too)

I have a have a piece of bike tyre bolted to mine. Chad welded a new foot on it with a captive nut and a supporting strut too as the original foot fell off after 5 years use. Works in the sloppiest mud/sand.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

I just bolted a lump of Stainless plate on, a hexagonal of about 2inches in diameter. I used a round headed m6 bolt & nyloc nut, the bolt head grips into the tarmac when parking on a slope.

Works fine & no welding required.

you drilled though the foot i assume? how is the ware on the bolt do you have to replace often.. but all in all I may but beg a weekend at the big guys (as i have a bit of other welding I would like to do..)

Chad ... oh Chad.... What do you use, Gas or Zap? Would you be willing to help? I can bring beer... although if you would want me to do the actual welding i'll drink afterwards.. I cant weld straight sober let alone when the world is spinning...

Xander, yes I just drilled a 6mm hole in the existing foot, I did take a little off the head with the angle grinder, there is no extra noticable wear after about 12months of use, I guess a S/Steel bolt would be harder if that could be an issue.

Welding may be a more permanent solution, I just wanted mine removable.

I still use a puck..... but you guys have given me ideas..

pucks are great ...but you have to remember to pick them up after.... with a fully laden bike its a right carry on....

Im thinking along the lines of a semi-permanant foot plate that can be attached when needed but stays on when you drive away...

Shouldnt be too hard to manufacture....

    Re: Side stand foot modification

I welded a perma-puck on mine - 1mm steel sheet, folded up round the edges for stiffness, approx 8cm by 11cm (huge).

Very easy to judge where to put it, so long as you have a centre stand/paddock stand/shop stand to put the bike on so you can fold the sidestand and eyeball it.

Points to consider that I didn't think of before I did mine:
    • does it clear the centrestand lever when both stands are folded?
    • how much does it stick out - mine decks out on hard left handers, despite looking like it's miles away from the road. (I figure it'll sort itself out eventually... )

    Re: Side stand foot modification

I went down the bolted route, drilled a hole and then attached an aluminium plate with a countersunk M6 bolt and nylock nut.

Went the aluminium route to save weight whilst still being thick enough to accomodate head of countersunk bolt.

I found it tricky to find exactly the correct position for the plate relative to sidestand in order to clear the centre stand and also not limit ground clearance too much.

I also added a spacer between the pad and the centre stand as I found the bike leaned over too much on the centre stand with the tall michelin desert tyres I fitted for my Morocco trip.

Overall it worked very well during my Morocco trip and I have since left it on.
