    Trailtech Vapor revcounter wiring

Just in the process of fitting a Vapor to my '98 TA, wondering if I can connect the revcounter input to the original Honda output?

I like everything to look 'factory' so was thinking it might be a bit neater this way...

Also, if you've fitted one in place of the original instruments, what did you do with the original loom? Without the frame and instruments there's a lot of loom hanging out the front. Don't want to do anything irreversible but wondering about cutting it back and putting in some new connectors etc??

    Cheers
    Dave

Personally I wouldn't cut anything back lest you or someone else wants to go back to original equipment. I would find a way to tidy the wiring up and make it look nice.

That's exactly my dilema, wouldn't want to do anything irreversible.

Have made a bit more space behind my new fairing so might be able to squeeze things in, without any cutting.

Oooh, now I'm confused. I've been considering the Vapor for a while and having read the installation manual I got the impression that the RPM sensor wire just wrapped round a spark plug cable (inductive pick up)

Is it more complicated than that ?

Yes it is that easy, just wrap it round an ht lead, I just put a cable tie on to secure it, job done. Have a look at this thread.

There's some pics of my instalation.

I absolutely love it, easy to read, looks great at night, excellent product. Mine has no fairing so hid all the OE cabling in the back of the headlight.

    Cheers

    Re: Trailtech Vapor revcounter wiring

Ive got an acewell - it said in the book to also wrap the revcounter wire round an ht lead, but when i was modding my bike, i just soldered a bullet connector on the end and connected it to the wire that goes to the original tacho - works fine and no messy wires around the top of the engine

Youll need to study a haynes manual - wiring diagram for your bike and work out which wire is which

    No problemo,

My thinking was just that it might be that little bit neater to lust connect to the oe honda wires, only a little bit neater but I do have sleepless nights worrying how I can make the conversion look 'factory'

Been spending ages trying to get the bracket for the vapor and headlight unit right but the mark 3 (or is it 4) is looking promising.....pics to follow.

    anton88,

Did the Acewell explicitly say you could connect to the oe wires or did you just try it?

Any more info / luck on wiring the vapor tacho to the original outputs ??

    Re: Trailtech Vapor revcounter wiring

Tried it but the readout wasn't right. There's something in the manual about some cdi? outputs needing different numbers of pulses per rev at different revs which might be something to do with it... but I gave up and just wound a wire around one of the ht leads. It ended up hidden so I was happy enough with it.
