    Lowered pipe (Jenna / ATGreg)

Hi guys This is an AT question really but.. not as it applies to many bikes.

I was just going through the Himalayan ride post
    Amazing ride report !!!!

and i noticed that many (if not most) of the AT had lowered endcans. As the can is the biggest reason for the panniers being out far or oneside smaller. Companies like metal mule insist on the can being lower for some bikes i was just wondering what people though of this. What about higher Domi style.

    Just your thoughts on this?

    (Nothing serious I hope, Kymmy?)

The dommie is quite fat in the rear, those pipes make it really wide...

If not for the pipes the rack on a dommie only has to be 30 cm wide, which together with 2 41 liter TT panniers gives less than 90 cm total width. With the pipes this would be 10-15 cm more, or having to use narrower panniers.

Re: Lowered pipe (Jenna / ATGreg)

    Hi Xander,

Watch this or another space - i've just got hold of a 'stubby' exhaust which i'm going to be grafting onto Goliath.

If i lost my toolbox behind the numberplate, it would fit in there , but i need the space.

So i'm gonna have a go at mounting it in a more vertical position like KTM do. It may be a no goer as it could be too noisey - we'll see.

I can see why some might want to lower the exhaust for pannier clearance, but seems like a dumb idea to me - more prone to crash damage and water ingress if youre going through deep water crossings and cut out????

Another possible solution, is build your own panniers and rack. This is stainless steel, built around the exhaust, the left hand pannier will (just) take an Arai Freeway helmet, and the whole bike is 80 cm wide.

Moving the silencer under the seat on any bike would involve changing the lengths of the end can and the connecting pipes from the headers.

Any change in these dimensions will affect the exhaust pulse - especially noticeable on a V-Twin. This could result in a loss of power and torque so would have to be recalculated and involve changing the pipe diameters to maintain the correct pulse ratios to prevent too much loss.

Doesn't exactly work wonders for suspension travel either, that wheel has to have somewhere to go when things get bumpy.

I could read your remark in a number of ways, among which are:
    "she's away right now"
"she's busy in the garage and can't be bothered to reply"
    "sick in bed"
    "hospital"
    "funeral"

Let's just say I hope it's something at or near the beginning of that range.
