    Screens

I have just read loads on screens and just want to confirm before I start chopping.

If I want a quieter ride ( not bothered about weather/wind protection ) I have to cut the original screen down.

There are no taller screens that make things quieter.

Reason is, I am getting bad tinitus, even on short rides.
I have tried taping up the vents in my helmet (crash helmet) but no difference.

a thread in the varaderoo forum is considering the exact same thing. My vote goes for cut down screens.

    Re: Screens

    Hi Rick,

I've a taller screen on my 650 TA, quite a bit more wind noise over the standard height screen, how about trying a journey with the screen removed just to get a feel before chopping up screens.

Do you wear earplugs? I've found quite a big difference between earplug types, I'm currently using some 3M plugs, absolute brilliant, even with a high screen.

    Re: Screens

Although some Vara riders prefer to cut down the screen, the Transalp already has quite a low one. As russh says, try riding without a screen first to see if it's the right direction for you. The best solution is dependent on bike, rider and crash helmet.

I always wear ear plugs though, regardless.

    Re the earplugs

Yes, on a long journey, but they are not that effective.

I think that the noise that affects my ears is the low frequency, most ear plugs get rid of the high frequency.

Tried without the screen, short journey, seems better, need to try a longer journey.

Anyone got a tatty old TA screen.

No, but they come on ebay quite regularly. I paid £5 for a brand new one about a year ago, then cut down my old one - which was great. The uncut down one is on the bike now, but I don't want to get rid of either yet.

    Re: Screens

Had it off (screen) since my last post. Great. 70 + is a bit uncomfotable but I just need to do some weights and get my strenght up. I think it is better in the winds but might be an illusion, not so noisy.

Now I just need to get a second screen to cut.

Maybe you just need to lean into the breeze. No effort required! Try sliding your backside back and allow your torso to "lie" on a cushion of air. Relieves all pressure from the wrists.

    Re: Screens

I tried that but I found it quite difficult to find the sweet point.

    Practice makes perfect.

I will buy a new screen, slice the top off, cut slots, and bolt the top on to the bottom, so I can slide it up and down. Might be able to refine the wind flow.
