    Front Caliper Pad Spring

Err, hate ot admit this, but I cannot remember how the front caliper brake pad spring fits.

It's item No 7 on the microfiche MCB3-F0900 found here -

A photo showing the spring in place would be dandy.

    Anyone????

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

    Re: Front Caliper Pad Spring

no photo I am afraid but here's an attempt to describe how it fits:

The centre bit of the spring sort of clips to the caliper on the lower shoulder. One end then sits neatly inside the caliper up against the back/top of the caliper, the other end pressing up against the pads just where the pin holds them in place. If you lie on the floor and look up at the pads you should be able to see it. I always fit mine before the pads go in. Once the pads are in the spring won't come off.

The spring is more or less symetrical - but I would aim to get the curve of the end going with the curve of the edge of the pads.

This is about as clear as mud, sorry.

They're not identical to my 600 but not far off. The spring fits into the little recess in the caliper and clips over the edge? Does that make sense? I'll try to do a photo but not 'til tomorrow I'm afraid.
You're not still working on those brake lines are you?

Well, it's a long story but in the end the four line kit went back to HEL, who suppled a two line kit. Reminds me to get in touch and make sure they got the four line kit back so's I can get refunded the difference.

This has been quite a frustrating exercise all round. The original Honda set up is secured neatly in place with brackets and the new HEL two line setup, apart from the brackets on the frok legs, are held onto the bottom yoke with cable ties. Sheesh!

I'm sure that the braided lines will make a huge difference, but the whole debacle has really taken the shine of things, if you know what I mean?

Makes me want to rebuild the original setup, by replacing the flexible hoses with braided lines so's that I can have a nice neat set up again.

A photo of the caliper spring in place would give me peace of mind.

Sorry you had such slog to get there and sorry I've just got around to posting a picture (busy at work). The spring can only go in one way so I'm sure you've done it right. I know it's not identical to yours but it fits in a similar way.

I've just posted a thread on how I got on doing a similar job with the brake line:

    Re: Front Caliper Pad Spring

    FatFergie,

Thanks for that. It appears from your photo that the pad spring is quite a bit shorter than those on the 650 TAs twin disc set-up.

Anyway, I managed to get it all back together (posted elsewhere) and nothing has fallen off. I still need to do a bit of brake bleeding as there seems to be a smidge of air still left in the system.

What I should of done was go to to Y2K Motorcycles in Headford (http://www.y2kmotorcycles.com/main.html), who are affiliated with HEL. Teach me to do more research the next time.

I'm still thinking of having the original set-up modified by replacing the flexible hoses (with stainless braided one) and keeping the rigid pipes. Just me being awkward and wanting a nice neat set-up.

    Cheers

    Try this Tony:

Turn your bars so that the master cylinder is as high as possible and level.
Squeeze the brake lever as hard as you can and then cable tie it to the bar grip. Leave it overnight and you should have a nice solid brake when you cut the tie off. The cable tie can cut into the grip so wrap a bit of rag or cardboard around it.

    Re: Front Caliper Pad Spring

Thanks for that Austin. I'll double check whether I've put the springs in correctly tomorrow.

Mind you, the brakes were working fine today, so I can't have got it too wrong.
