Thinking of buying an other ex-plod bike from Auctions

A year ago, I bought a ex-pld 650 Alp which clocked up only 13k & kitted with heated grips (the dial is shot though but I have one sitting around), honda panniers, hepco becker lower engine bars & centre stand.

The condition of the bike is very good, a few marks left at where reflectives used to be and a few black marks on the rims which again is common on the pre-05 650.

I just feeded it with new GPS oil, honda oil filter , new coolant and new air filter and nothing else, it hasnt given me a single problem.

So now I am looking to go auction and possibly interested in later Pan 1100?

What should I looks out for in the auction?

I think it is a bit out of proportion as the police usually buy a couple of bikes which are used for spares, just incase one of them get bent.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

It's not about crash damaged pan euro's but actually due to the fact that police configured pan euros with the xtra weight of the police equipment is causing the bikes to high speed wobble. There's already been at least one major incident due to the instability hence a few police forces have gone over the top and de-identified/chopped/sold the bikes for scrap materials only and not as ridable bikes or even spares...

    Lunlunzai,

The MCN story refered to 1300 pans , you are looking for a 1100 right??

    I have owned 2 of them - 1) 2000 ABS model and 2) 2002 non ABS.

They are absolutely bullet proof bikes , but they are very heavy , tipping the scales at 280 (ish) KG.

I much prefered the NON ABS version it has a different size front wheel and just felt slighlty more balanced to me.

Nothing much to look out for , the only real weak point is the exhaust "Y" piece on the standard honda exhaust , the rear wheel passes right between the y and if not regularly hosed in winter, soon rots. But most 1100 will now have out lived their original exhausts, maybe not ex plodders though. The police generally have a very rigourous maintenance regime and all police bikes are washed by the riders at the end of shift.

One nice touch with ex plodders is that they generally are fitted with hazzard and fog light switches, that were not a standard fit on civilian bikes.

I'll be interested to see what you find , I always glance down the Pan 1100 for sales in MCN.............. I'm kind of half looking for a Pan or Deauville to do my RoSPA stuff on.
    2011 Triumph Tiger 800 - "Black Pussy" - MMMM Nice !!!
    2000 Suzuki DRZ400S - "Ol' Yella" - very bright
    2011 Peugeot V-Clic 50cc - "Scoot" - It's my wife's, an enjoyable ride.

    I have a house , but I can't guarantee it's safe !!

    Jack,

Yes, I am looking for a 1100 which I believe it is a better bike of two after all.

There is one ex-plod 1100 being serviced in my local ex-honda dealer, the y shape pipe as you said is in need of some work.

I tried both the 650 and 700 deauvilles again the 650 seems to be a better bike in both my and my honda mechanics 's opinion. If your RoSPA stuff is more in urban area, I think a deauville is very close to ideal.

A lot of ex-plod 1100s with 30-60k miles are being sold for 1.5-2.2k, I reckon they are good value for money.

Can you recommend an auction house in the South east? I checked Google but there's a mess of different sites- Is there an official, Police sanctioned, company or at least, the largest one?
    Cheers

Re: Thinking of buying an other ex-plod bike from Auctions

I bought an ex police pan at auction a few years ago. First thing to know is that you will have to register it at the DVLA as a private bike and not police. I had issues with the coolant banjo unions cracking and also a split coolant hose. Other than that I commuted 130miles a day round trip on it.
Although they have low mileage, the engines do alot of static running which isn't brilliant.
    Hope this helps
