well done andy for replying.in defence and just for the record i have always used ebc and I cover 40,000 miles per year. I have never had a problem with ebc pads.sensible priced pads that work well on my busa, and worked well for almost 70,000 miles on my 1050 tiger and will be used in my 660 tenere & 750 super tenere.

Re: Watch out for EBC brake pad catastrophic failures

Just had another set of pads fail. EBC this time, though I've seen it on other makes too.

They were thin (within service limit), and corroded too. I think they stuck to the rust on the stainless steel disc (also an EBC item), since the bike hadn't been moved for about a week. (I've seen that problem before -- on a 1970s Guzzi with cast iron discs...).

Pads bought January 2007, probably fitted within a month or so, so about 2.5 years old, though that will only be maybe 15k miles. Will have seen one-and-a-bit Scottish winters of regular commuting in that time.

Interestingly the caliper was not very dirty, the 8 year old piston came up shiny with just one quick spray of brake cleaner and wipe with a rag. So the abuse can't have been that bad. The bike gets rinsed down most days in winter, and washed properly most weekends.

Maybe we should all throw away any brake pads that get to be ~1 year old regardless of wear..?

    Hi Guys

Only just got to read the responses to our offer of a factory tour, lets make it a September thing because by then it may even have stopped raining and people will have done with Holidays.

First date is Sept 9th at Bristol which I can arrange for a tour, please coordinate thru the site owner who has kindly agreed to keep a list if riders who might want to come along.

Time and other detail can be confirmed in due course.

my e mail again is andy@ebcbrakes.com

On the subject of old stock, there is no problem with shelf stock sitting in a dealers store so a sell by date wont work but, there can be problems with pads in bikes that are left in weather year after year and personally I would change bike brake pads every two years even if they were not worn out. I would certainly remove and inspect pads every 3000 miles or three months, wipe them over and inspect for edge lifting or corrosion and if bad junk them.

If anyone has a set of failed pads for any reason, send me details and we will get them swapped. This does not cover normal wear and tear so a customer sending a pad worn down to the backplate will politely be declined.

Wear rates vary a lot between riders and caliper designs, some people can burn an organic pad out in 2000 miles especially on rears, on other bikes they can go 20,000 plus. Sintered pads normaly last and survive corrosion better but even so I recommend the inspection for edge lift as I have seen some "Other brand" sintered pads pop off backplates before

    Cheers guys

    Cheers guys
only just come across this thread, and id have to say, like someone else said, hats off to you andy. not many companys / people take the time to stand up and answer questions and face criticism.

My own limited (15,000 miles) experience of ebc pads has been fine, 3 different bikes, different riding mileages, all weathers and ive had no complaints with them at all. ill certainly be taking time out to check my current set, but ill be continuing to use ebc for the forseeable future.

id take up the offer of a factory tour, but its a bit of a trek for me
    Chris.

    Aha
just found this and will be returning my failed pads to Andy. Anything that makes life safer is worth doing, but i have a feeling that the set on my daughters pug scooter that came apart (while i was riding it luckily) about 8 years ago were ebc , I do not think i will ever use EBc again my life is worth more than a set of brake pads,

Re: Watch out for EBC brake pad catastrophic failures

I've never used EBC pads in my 35 years of riding bikes...but I tried some EBC brake shoes on my XL250SA & they were rubbish so I took them back & got a refund.
