K&N Filter oil sp-ray ok for No Toil Filter

I bought a No Toil foam filter for my XR250 and while I could go buy some specific oil for it I already have a K&N recharge kit for the K&N in my Blade..the oil is a spray oil and in K&N's traditional Red colour which i guess is mainly to see where you've already sprayed with oil.

Safe to use on a No Toil foam filter or would a soak & squeeze out in fresh 10W40 engine oil be better?

got this answer of a trusted source on my regular sportbike forum who if i recall correctly know his oil but I still wouldn't mind a second opinion cos time is short and I can see me wanting to start the beast at some point this week as its nearly there now

The K&N oil will be fine Air filter oil is just thick, sticky oil. Although you can use gear oil, filter oil has a "stringy" additive which holds onto the dust better, rather than letting it "flow" through the filter under constant suction. A really good oil to use is chain saw oil, this has plenty of the additive in order to stop the oil "flinging" off the revolving chain. I used it for years of MX and got massive piston life.

All of which reminds me that I haven't cleaned and oiled my Blades filters for some years.....

    Go ahead and use it.
Colour is to see where sprayed? Dunno that one. Probably! Unless they've got other colours in their range.
More important is to not over spray. Your Blade on full blat sucks huge air.
Standard XR250 is a little asmatic so needs all the puff it can get. Well you know what I'm trying to say .
Stay away from engine oil. Don't possess the correct properties to retain small or fine particles.

Not heard of No Toil Filters (but been out of the loop for some time). What's it say on the box? It's not a northern filter is it: No T'oil Filter?

    I'll get me coat!

I used Pipercross on my foam filters (pattern ones from Wemoto) seemed to work fine, I wouldn't mind betting that the colour is just so you know who it was made by, I would imagine they're all pretty much the same.

Re: K&N Filter oil sp-ray ok for No Toil Filter

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm going to go for the K&N spray oil afterall as using engine oil seems wrong and I dont have any gear oil to hand.

re: the red colour of the oil, then yes to a certain degree it must be a marketing ploy but when i bought the kit (which also includes a detergent) and first cleaned a dirty K&N filter of an R1 I had not so long ago I was fairly surprised to discover K&N filters gauze and paper is actually white once its been cleaned. I've had K&N filters in the past for various sportbikes but always bought new & they come pre-oiled so always assumed it was the filter material itself which was red.......I never needed to clean them as I usually sell bikes on within a year or so

BUT the red does make it easy to see where you've already sprayed as your not supposed to over do the spraying of a K&N so its a case of one good even spray all over much like the best technique with spray paint.
