    Electrical Gremlins - Opinions Please

I was out with Steve T the other day on my '93 RD07 when I pulled in for fuel and after re-filling the bike refused to start. The only thing I did (which shouldn't be relevant but maybe is, more on that later) was to re-set all the trips on the Tripmaster. The bike had been running fine. Quick check revealed no spark.

AA'd home then after much fiddling and (mostly) head-scratching in my garage the bike refused to go. Steve went home to think and wait for inspiration.

Next night whilst waiting for Steve to arrive I fiddled and faffed about and lo and behold the beastie fired up. We stopped it, started it, stopped it, started it. Problem solved but gremlin not identified.

Steve has since decided to give the bike a thorough electrical check at his place.

However today I went out started the bike with no problem. I decided to replicate what I did at the fuel station and zeroed all of the trips. The bike has since refused to start!

Any suggestions re the cause of all of this gratefully received.

    Neil

I didn't think that the Tripmaster had an immobilzer function and why would it operate when resetting both trips?? Unless someone has modified it to do so.

    Horrible coincidence???

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Has the trip computer got a short.
Try flipping the kill switch a couple of times.
Pull your hair out, get a gun and shoot someone.
    All out of ideas now.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

This is what I do when I get a leccy problem.

    1. Get out the multi tester
    2. Put it on the resistor setting.
    3. Stick the black lead on the battery earth
    4. Check the multi tester works by touching the red lead on various parts of theframe and forks.
    5. Pull apart suspect and random connectors and stick the red lead into them to see which wires are earth. Make a careful note
    6. Then switch the multi -tester onto volts
    7. Repeat step 5 but seeing which wires have volts in them. Make another careful note.
    8. Stare at the wiring diagram in total puzzlement trying to work out where the electricty comes from and goes to in each circuit.

    9. Give up before I go insane.

10 Waggle random wires and connectors hoping that something obvious will appear.

    11. Hope that magic will happen overnight and it will all be sorted the next day.

Sorry mate, not much help really.

Steps 1-8 works about 25% of the time when you get 12volts down a wire that also earths or some other baffling reading (like 6volts or something) but sometimes they are supposed to do that, which really baffles me (I suppose its the absence of 12v in these wires that is a problem coz the leccy is then going somewhere else).

Steps 10&11 are surprisingly effective as well - as you found out.

Good luck, by the way what's a "Tripmaster"? A bus?
