    New boots and gearshift problem

Hi folks, its my first post in this section but it seemed a general question. Got some new boots from ebay, nice boots, thor mx type. trouble is my foot(size 11)and gearshift spacing seems all wrong. because my lower leg no longer bends as without tall boots it looks like its going to be out with the welder and bits of steel.
has anybody done any mod on their gearshift to deal with this sort of thing. any comments before i start cutting. SLR by the way

    Woooah Steady with the torch!!!!

Same problem, moved the gear shift down one notch so that I could change up with boot on rest, have to lift foot off rest to change down, then boots broke in and don't have to lift anymore.

    Sorted.

I assume you were going to use the welder on the bike, not the foot.

Yeah, should probably mess with the notches first, but taking it down a notch would make it worse for me. lever already feels a bit on the short side. maybe not the original one

Just have to pick your leg up to change gear, you'll soon get used.

Better than broken ankles off road.

Oh, . . . usually have to move lever up one spline to get your toe under.

I write before my brain has finished thinking.
It was the thought of the welding torch.

Yep - thats what i have to do - fine changing up, but have to lift my leg a bit to change down - didnt like it at all at first, but you dont notice after a while. Boots well and truly broken in, but still have to lift my leg !!

I too am a 'leg lifter'. I have always worn motocross boots, even on my FJs and GPzs, so I always lift the gear lever to help with the gear changing.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

I too moved the gear lever up a bit when I went to MX boots, since then I've started wearing trails boots a bit more flexable but they still have the protection of MX boots.

Now I know how to explain the dog raising it's leg,

It is trying to change gear.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Re: New boots and gearshift problem

Added a little bit to the length tonight(ooh er), cut it and welded a small length of same cross section steel in, lifted a couple of notches on the spline and reshaped the lever a little bit. Bit of trial and error but much better now. still take a bit of getting used to as i break the boots in.

    cheers for the comments folks
