    types of brake pads explained?

I'm looking to replace all my brake pads, i have replaced pads before but i never really understood what the terminolgy meant?

So sorry for being dumb, but can someone give me a clue to what these terms mean and what suits a Transalp ?

    Organic pads?
    Kevlar pads?
    Sintered pads?

    Then GG / HH ?

I'm looking to fit braided hoses too so should that have any effect on my choices?

    Thanks !

    Hi Dominic

The standard o e fitment is the best match for the standard honda oe discs. The are already sintered, which means they have a small amount of metal in the pad material to control the generation of heat build up without wear rate when braking.

On a Transalp these will be all you'll need.

The HH rated pads are designed for higher performance braking normally associated sports bikes but would only use depending if you ride track days etc. These control the temperature build up to a greater extent than standard pads

    Regards

    ok cheers, that'll do nicely.
I fitted EBC pads before but had big problems with them.

Anyone know where i can buy the standard NISSIN pads rather than paying main dealer prices - web searches came up with nothing?

    Cheers

Wemoto list a range of pads for the Transalp.

    http://shop.wemoto.com/index.dyn?oid=25274

They also have a description of HH and GG pads.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

But their pads are mostly pattern or EBC.

True. Genuine Honda brake pads are £17.50 from David Silver Spares - front or rear.

Re: types of brake pads explained?

    Hi Dom

If you look on the Lings site it lists the Pads for the 700 TA and the honda part number. if you then search with th epart number It also lists the other honda bikes that the Pads fit.

Couldn't find Pads for my 700 until i did this and found out the rear pads are the same as those for the CBF600 and 1300 (I think). these were easy to find and lo and behold fit like a dream.

Also i think from Lings I also picked up that he OEM rear pads are organic/GG type whilst the fronts are sintered/HH type. If my memory serves me right the difference is that the GG type are resin bonded (ie glued together) whilst the higher metal content of the HH allows them to be sintered (ie gently melted together). Think it makes adifference ih their grippiness. the GG will grab more gently but tend to fade if they get too hot whereas the HH type grip a bit more fiercely but fade less with prolonged use.

Hope this helps, certainly check out Lings even if only as a reference source.
