Just out of curiosity, did you power you sat-navs via the bike or battery? it's just that the givi bag has holes for the wires to power off the bike.

I just thought, people are gonna think i work for givi or somet lol

Easy answer to that my tank bag is magnetic and works perfectly, but the xr is plastic and you wouldn't get it on there easily so i bought the ram mount adaptor for the xr.

On the varadero i mainly use the tomtom so i wired a relay in and use that as a switched power supply when i use the 60csx on the xr i use batteries they last around 18hrs and the xr is a little bit lacking in electric anyway

I use 1 of these to mount my Tom Tom one on the bike and stick a plastic bag over it if it rains.

There several different type on ebay for various makes of sat navs

    tony,
ive been comparing the different nuvis on the garmin website and youre right, the newer upmarket ones do have a route storing facility but then obviously, they are the more expensive ones!

I use (or perhaps I should say I USED to use) work's Tom Tom on a suction mount on my Transalp screen until it fell off a couple of weeks ago and got run over by a big red bus

I had to rather shamefacedly go to our (rather stern) chief financial officer and say is this insured? (holding up a very broken tom tom!)

to my surpise - and after explaining what had happened bike, gtps, pot hole, bus - he said - "no it's not insured but don't worry about it - at least it wasn't you under the bus!"

no more using suction mounts for me!

    Thanks Dr Nick

    You've convinced me

I could imagine trying to catch it as it came unstuck and something rather worse happening

    Could super glue it

and what's worse is that I turned around as it fell - and saw the bus driver develop a rather manic grin - and deliberately aim for it - as I gesticulated to him to try to avoid it - just in case it had survived the fall

    bah humbug!

Re: Thinking of a non-motorbike GPS?

I almost bought one of these:

3.5" Touch Screen Motorbike SAT NAV / Motorbike GPS on eBay (end time 03-Jul-09 19:16:34 BST)

But the 28 day delivery combined with bills to pay and waiting to be paid at the moment put me off a bit. It appears to be based upon a generic chinese pda system like some of the car based ones. There are a lot of those (car based) floating around on ebay at the moment, mostly sold from hongkong (though a few english sellers of the same ones too). From what I can gather from online forums geared to them, they're not mean to be too bad,and can be hacked to run general pda software too, and can run various different gps software if you don't like the one that comes with them.

I've been toying with the idea of getting one of the cheaper ones then taking it to bits and trying to waterproof it (or splash proof it at least) myself using silicone sealant. Probably a bit risky, but at £45ish for a new pda/gps system, or £55-60ish for a 4.3 inch widescreen version, it's tempting to take the risk and give it a try, even if there's a risk of breaking it or invalidating any warranty (not that the warranty is probably worth much if it's bought from hongkong ofcourse). They'll also work as mp3 and movie players and support relatively large sd cards so might be nice to take off the bike and watch a film before bed when camping, then charge it up the next day again on the bike.
