    Brake caliper bolts

My son's bike lost a brake caliper mounting bolt today. I have put an "ordinary" bolt in with a spring washer to replace. Are the proper bolts special in anyway? I note they have 12mm heads where I would normally expect an M8 thread to have 13mm head. But other than that are special high tensile steel or anything to take the high stress I guess they are under.

Oh and if anyone has got one, gratefully received for a donation to MAW.

The original bolts are high tensile steel, that said i took mine out and put normal bolts in on my xr so that i have to carry less tools when i go long distance on it, i changed mine for cap head bolts then i only need carry Allen keys

Yep, I use ordinary bolts from the local hardware shop on my bikes and have never had any problems.

Are you sure it was a straight swap?

I have been told calipers are normally a fine thread while the 'common or garden' M8 bolt is a normal thread...

Brake caliper mounting bolts are standard thread, brake pad retaining pins are fine thread

Think it's only M10 threads that are fine pitch on Jap bikes - M8 are standard pitch. I replaced mine with stainless allen head bolts years ago n they're fine (as in good - not pitch)
