Petrol Canister attached to Givi Panniers

    Hi all,

thought you might want to see my wee custom fit job on my Givi's - wanted to store a petrol 2L canister somewhere on the bike and came up with this idea which wored perfectly and is as neat as you can get.

Bought a Touratech canister and bracket, total cost £45 inc postage I think.

Ive attached the bracket to the back of the Givi box so it fits in between the frame of the rack where there is a small square just a little bigger then the bracket... pictures make more sense so click on the link.

With the canister full, the fuel/liquid level comes up to just below the top of the neck with the canister fitted at the upper most angle allowed so spillage shouldnt be an issue, going to run it over the next few weeks with water and measure it weekly to test it out for leaks but the screw cap seems pretty good.

I drilled the Givi box to allow the nut/bolts to attach the bracket and it just fits with the screws supplied, could be a bit longer but as they are allen key bolts you can tighten them til the locknut catches in the bolt - and they hardly stick out either, but going to surround with foam pads so they cant catch anything.

    Fits neat doesnt it?

This canister must be in upright position otherwise it will leak petrol through breather.

Farky they look a great job... My only question is have you done this to both panniers? I only ask because won't one of them be quite close to the exhaust?

ah i see, the canister goes inside the pannier! had a bit of trouble with the pics and didnt see what you were on about for a while there!

very neat job, it fits in there great, and uses a bit of that "redundant space" we all have somewhere. no good for my varadero with the high level pipes both sides, but it would have fit both sides of my old triumph. to be honest with a 25ltr tank i dont need extra fuel.

XRV freak; do you have one of these bottles with a breather in the top? i have a couple from hein gericke and they are both watertight with no breather. thats interesting to know, that what looks like the same product from HG and touratech for example are in fact different.

That looks really nice and functional.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

What breather?? I cant see a breather hole anywhere other than when you add the pouring spout as it has a breather hole in it. I filled this full of water and turned it upside down and nothing came out so I dont think there is one.

If you look at the image of the canister with the cap off, the water level is just to noticeable with the light reflecting off it, it comes up to the just below the spout - this is beacuse both the panniers and the canister bracket are tilted upwards as much as possible to relieve the chances of leaks from the spout.... i will be testing with just water for a few weeks but even then I might just reduce the levels by 100ml or so.

For those questioning their tank levels and mpg, this at least gives you the faith to run it til it stops (which I actually did...why does it always run out at the bottom of a hill!!).

Re: Petrol Canister attached to Givi Panniers

Re this idea, I have just fitted Givi racks and panniers. I noticed the space between the left hand case and the bike and thought some use could be made of it but have so much to do that I never considered anything further.
Your idea is excellent, I heve been riding bikes with fuel guages and no taps for so long that the I am bound to get caught out soon!!!
Spare fuel carried in this way is a great solution.

PS I have considered a small peli case on the left hand side as an alternative to carrying the two full size panniers. I got the idea from a post on this site showing a peli case fitted between the no plate and mudguard.
