O.K. I have just fitted the new chain and front sprocket.
After all the queries about how the sprocket fits, I took photos of it in place.

After removing the bolts:

The plate rotates slightly:

Retainer slides of and leaves the sprocket:

Replace the bolts to get the retainer on correctly:


Just tried the new front and it does not make too much difference to pulling away.
