    number plate thefts

    hi all,
Right some low life in southampton tried to steal my rear number plate while doing some shopping, only noticed when some car driver started honking and flashing lights.

now I normally dont stop incase its road rage etc usually just nail it and loose the tosser but today I though maybe he likes the bike.
numberplate hanging off by one bolt, apparently he/they unscrewed the retaining plastic nut but must have been distrurbed [good job I did nto see him or he`d have two hands missing].

refixed with metal screws and locktight and locknuts, try to slow them down next time.

What I really need is some form of false back plate which can hold the numberplate proir to fixing to bike. Thought of quick release plate but maybe i`d forget to reattach [onist officer] or is it against the law to park up without a number plate.

    open for suggestions.

I dont actually know the law but my gut instinct is telling me leaving your bike on the public highway with no number plate is a no no.

I found these on the net - doesnt give any info on costs or if they do bikes, but might be worth talking to if you continue to be worried about a further attempt on your plate.

it is illegal not to have a numberplate on the road, but if its been pinched what are you expected to do about it? you could report this to the police and get a crime number, then if it does happen again (highly unlikely but someone with an identical bike might be ringing yours to get away with speeding, congestion charges or selling a hot bike, it will show up as a goodun on an HPI check, see) you can at least explain that youve been targetted again and would get away with it.

    Re: number plate thefts

hi all thanks for the input,
thought about the anti theft shatter number plates but then they would just unscrew bolts as usual, thought of attaching false back plate but too much agroo.

so as usuall applied some lateral thinking and reached for the welder and fitted mild steel bolts and nuts and just spot welded nuts in place. unless they have a mobile grinder/welder they are stuffed.

I think they looked at the tax disk and so it had plenty to go and thought as long as they drive carefully they could use their bike with my plate.

Anyone know if these work with bike plates? They just look like flashy screws to me...

Nicking numberplates, makes you vomit with rage.

How about using pop rivets ?

How can you make the tax disc secure?

    Re: number plate thefts

    hi nareef,
those type of antitheft bolts/screws are okay till your local theif buy`s the same kit so has the tool to remove the bolt etc and as they screw into rather than bolt and nut they are aimed at mainly cars.

beast idea is to weld or rivet them on with backing washers

As for preventing theft of tax disc same thing realy , my cover has 10 alen bolts around a hex cover and one bolt through the chain guard with cover superglued over.

    Re: number plate thefts

If the bike is parked on a public road or public area then it must have a numberplate attached (otherwise it's a fixed penalty ticket)

Best to permanaty attach a metal plate to the backa and then get one of the plates which stick on and if pulled off they break or damage the lettering.. If it's broken off then call the police and report it as a theft at once otherwise you could be responsible for a few fines or at least under suspision of Bilking (taking petrol without payment) which most illegal plates tend to be used for

    Re: number plate thefts

Odd really as I found my plate hanging off a couple of days ago. I assumed that one bolt had just vibed off or maybe I clipped something. Maybe somone had a go at mine too. Guess I'll have to see if I can fine my ancient stash of pop rivets...
