    Replace Brake pads

Ok time for school boy question.

I refurbished my calipers and put new front pads on. When I received the pads from DS the set that were for the right and put on the left and the left on the right. I ensured the mild steel 'cover' was at the piston side. See picture below as example (06455 on the invoice was the left set). I replaced them as the came off the bike.

Have I put them on incorrectly?

On a connected note my rear brake is a bit soft. I have bleed the brakes a few times and no air is coming out, any suggests? Although it is not softer than before I was hoping for it to be more responsive. I'm on a TA.

    Cheers guys & girls...

    Re: Replace Brake pads

how old is your bike? a soft brake usually means air, but if you've bled it properly then the next likely suspect is a bulging hose. unless you've got braided hoses the oem rubber hoses do start to bulge a bit, after a couple of years, if you look in the handbook you should see they are due for renewal in one of your services. hang a heavy weight off the pedal overnight, that should get any air out.

as for the pads, i think they only go in one way, so unless you put them facing the wrong way you would be fine

    Re: Replace Brake pads

Cheers davsato, I like the idea of a weight I'll get that in-place for tonight. The bike is 2002 and I had wanted to change the hoses but funds did not allow it, I checked for bulges before changing them and their were no obvious ones.

Good to know the pads are in the correct way, they can get swapped but the mild steel 'cover' would be against the casing as opposed to the pistons, if installed as per the invoice description of which one is left & right.

    Cheers

i dont know why they even bother labelling them, you would have to be a total numpty to manage to put them in with the backing against the disc. i suppose in america those numpties are then able to sue, so they have to label everything

    Re: Replace Brake pads

    Hi

I was checking this thread, an the question of where to put the mild steel plate (anti squealer).

I was sure that when I removed my original pads last year, that the plate was NOT on the piston side of the pads..

And checking the micro fiche here ,

You can see that , my suspicions where correct.

I guess someone in the past, was unsure which way round it should go, and guessed wrong.

Alba, I have no idea if fitting the plate thingy, next to the pistons will make any difference , but I thought you should know..

    cheers

Off to fit my new pads , this afternoon..

    Re: Replace Brake pads

ah i see what you mean now, (a diagram paints a thousand words!)

yes the anti-squeal backing is clearly on the open side, not the piston side. i didnt cotton on before because ive only ever used EBC or ferodo pads, and never on the varadero and the backing was always bonded onto the pad, ive never had one seperate before. handy to know, my fronts must be getting pretty worn by now. ive just had the rears done in the service but the varadero with linked brakes is always harder on the rears
