Motocross boots; how should they feel?

I'm wanting to get a pair of crosser boots so that if the tralp ever lands on top of me I can still walk afterwards. Went to try a pair on yesterday and they really looked the part (diadora MX4's), but I just didn't feel they'd offer, well, anything in terms of protection if a 200kg bike decided to try to break my ankle. Which it will, one day. No torsion control system, not very tough plastic (I could see a peg going straight through it, for instance), etc. etc.

Are they all like that, or are there some out there that will help when my alp decides it doesn't like me taking it offroad and tries to kill me because of it?

    Thanks

I have always worn MX boots riding,Yes they do feel hard if their MX boots, but Trial boots are soft. In my experience you will have more protection but a large flying stone still hurts and you WILL have wet feet.

I dunno about the diadora's, but my HG MX boots felt like you were wearing a cast at first. They were very sturdy, so maybe look at a few others first.
The more you wear them the less they squeek and softer they become, but as j said you will get wet feet when it rains.

do what? plastic boots? gizmos? sounds terrible mate!!

get a good pair of leather calf length boots and if you must have the MX buckles make sure they are top quality and will last or that you can buy spares and they are easy to replace. the catches on these are the bits that will wear out first or act as sliders in an off, so being able to replace them is important or its a new pair of boots.

youve got to be careful you can get on with full on MX boots, the proper ones tend to get to be a pain to put on/off all the time and you end up not using them. the blakeys can shred carpets too so they are great for winding up the mrs.

i use boots which i think are a great compromise, HG tuareg boots. they are kind of 50/50 road/offroad boots, they dont have the chunky offroad sole pattern but they are comfortable to walk in, they have the buckles up the side, steel shank in the sole, ankle and toe caps and a beefy shin pad, and they are goretex so waterproof too. ive worn the same pair for several years now and when i had a slide the only thing to do was replace one buckle that wore down to the leather, saving my foot in the process. £7 for a new one and two rivets, back to full use.

reccommended, but prices have crept up lately (you do know there is a recession on, HG?) so have a look around.

I have the HG MX boots as well

    Hein Gericke (UK) Ltd.

But find my textile trousers (which I tend to always wear) don’t fit inside them comfortably so end up using my AlpineStar waterproof ankle ridge boots all year. So sadly the MX boots only get used in summer over leathers on warm days. (Not very often)

So do most people wear then inside or outsides there textile trousers or are my legs just too fat for MX boots?

Re: Motocross boots; how should they feel?

Not looking for some 24/7 boots, just want something I can put on if I know I'm going to be doing some offroad or some spiritted road riding.

What surprised me most about the diadora's was that I just didn't feel happy with them; I felt that if I crashed they wouldn't help a huge amount. Can I expect to find a boot that feels like it will protect really well, or is it just a case of "it will protect you, just trust it"?

Thanks for all the replies, and sorry for putting the thread in the wrong place

My Aline Stars, (and Fox before them) MX boots are like ski-boots to wear, (I walk like a penguin with them on they are that stiff), but if I ever fell off it'd be the bits ABOVE the boots I'd be worried about..............

Plus one for the AlpineStars. But as J said, if you get wet, or it rains, your feet will get cold and wet.

Thats where the sealskinz socks comes into their own

get the comfiest boots you can get and plus 1/2 size to allow for thick socks , most boots leak at sometime [ unless rubber wellys] so I have a pair of "sealskinz" socks waterproof and warm or get some Goretex boot socks from ex army supply of ebay. Also very good as long as tape ain`t coming of then as in can easily be re-ironed on.

A s you probably know the mx boots have steel foot plates and shin protectors etc but most trial boots dont , hence easier to walk in.

+1 for them aswell... got a pair recently from DC, plenty of adjustment, and relatively easy to walk in once you get the hang of how to.
once adjusted properly they give a great sense of protection to your foot/ankle/calf... and look cool too
