Shoei XR 1100 Wind Noise Caution

Bought a Shoei XR1100 recently having been convinced of its excellence and quiet performance by the very seductive advertising. It also got a good write up in Ride magazine which on re reading hinted at possible turbulence/wind noise. It is noisier than my previous Airoh S4 peaked lid producing a deep bass sound not heard before starting at quite low speed ie 30-40mph. The local shop was not interested and referred me to the Shoei rep. He claimed that the XR1100 is quieter than previous Shoei helmets but makes no claim about noise in comparison with other makes of lid. Strange that, all the advertising lead me to believe it was up with the leaders in silence performance wind tunnel tested and all but not so.
I was advised to check the visor fitting and that was as much as Shoei were prepared to do. Tried several variations of screen deflector including Heroblobs Aero Trim in addition to the touring MRA screen fitted. If anybody any experience with Heroblobs Laminar Tip screen add on I would like to hear it. Such a pity because the helmet fits like a glove and is most comfortable. Next step ear plugs but not the type which insert into the ear canal, if you want to start an ear infection that is the way to do it.

I have an Airoh S4 and previously had a Shoei Interceptor. The Shoei was whisper quiet and one of the best lids I've ever owned. If the XR1100 is meant to improve on previous Shoei lids, it should be miles quieter than the S4.

The post was moved because it was in the Transalp thread. The subject is not Transalp specific, therefore it was moved.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

I used to have a Shoei XR1000 which I thought was very noisy and was also uncomfortable with ear plugs. I now have a SHoei Hornet, which ought to be noisier but isn't. I sometimes think its the style of bike - XR1000/1100 made for sport bikes, the Hornet made for Adventure bikes. Make a bad match and you get noise, turbulence or whatever.

My Shoei Raid 2 increases the base 'boom' noise. I find that 'scruchy' earplugs amplify the boom like little antena into my ears.

I don't know how ear plugs would be effective if they didn't go into the ear canal.

I've used ear plugs for years, never had an ear infection. Throw away disposables as soon as you see them begin to get grubby, and wash custom-made ear plugs. No problem.

(If the ear plugs increase the noise then you haven't pushed them in far enough and the tips are touching the lining.)

Long term, the risk to your hearing is far greater if you don't use plugs than if you. You could also consider buying the Shoei Whisper Kit - helps a lot.

I replaced my XR1000 with a BMW Sport, which is supposed to be one of the quietest, but it's not much quieter than the XR1000.

Re: Shoei XR 1100 Wind Noise Caution

Old thread I know but I've just bought a Shoei XR1000 to replace my SHoei Interceptor and I can say with some authority that for me at least the XR1100 is the quieter of the two. The Interceptor was already a quiet lid but the XR1100 is that little bit better.

The vents work better aswell. I wish I had bought it before the Germany invasion.

I would agree with what your shoei rep says. I have a raid 1 and that gets alot of wind noise on the Vardero when i have the clear visor on. When i change it to my Black visor most of the noise and turbulence goes away. Don't ask me why it does it i can't explain it, but it is a fact whether it's because the visor is thinner? i have heard of other people having the same experience.
