Re: Rear light LED on Givi Top Box

Thinking about this post made the journey from work pass more quickly.
It would be neat to have an electrical supply in a top box that just provided power without the plugs and sockets problems.

The 555 timer as mentioned by Jarl and also the oscilator circuits that those 12v dc to 240 v Ac inverters use. Just make up some coils and play about a bit with the number of windings and cores.

I'm shure there is an old low wattage inverter in the garage, amongst those valuable off cuts of veroboard and surplus LED's.

Re: Rear light LED on Givi Top Box

Holy LEDs batman .... theyve confused the hell out of me!

Possibly some confusion on the location of my reflector as mine wraps around the rear and sides of the box as a constant as opposed to the brake light idea that Givi supply which sits in the middle above the opening mech.

Glad I asked about the Givi brake light though, will give it a miss if its pants, not suprised really.

Considering the idea of a high vis strip of material as a simple immediate solution and then maybe set about adapting some bicycle lights into the reflector powered by batteries.... only looking for nighttime use really.

Now if one of you could work out how to create a strip of led's about 18inches long that will fit behind the reflector and power from a small battery set... im sorted!

I looked into replacing the plain white plastic tape that sits behind the red plastic strip on my Givi Maxia top-box. Had a Google about to see what was available and got an idea from ADV Rider (I think it was).

You can get mega reflective tape that is used in the marine industry for life saving gear - the name I came across was "Solas" tape. The idea is that you replace the plain white tape (that is only sticky tape) with this very, very reflective stuff. It can be got in various widths and, I believe, is sold by the metre. Just haven't come across a supplier yet.

Just an idea - and not even mine.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

Re: Rear light LED on Givi Top Box

    Okay some photos for you.

First, the standard tail light -

Now with the brake light on -

And finally with the Givi high level brake light, modified to use high brightness LEDs instead of the standard filament lamps -

They do not look so much like individual points of light to the human eye, this is due to the extended light spectrum that the camera picks up. To see this effect view the business end of your telly remote with your camera, it will pick up the infrared from the LED.

Oh, and I had to beggar about with the Givi sprung connector to get it to work. Looks like it'll be consigned to the bin sometime soon.

Did it make a big difference? The white tape that is used on the Givi boxes is nothing spectacular, and the Solas tape is meant to be highly reflective so I would hope there would be a vast improvement.

That's as good as I hoped it would be.

Seeing as Ireland is surrounded by sea, and there's lots of boat type thingies, have a friend that works in a chandlers, it's amazing that I still haven't tracked down any Solas tape yet.
