IF, Swiss legislation prevents the carrying of fuel in portable containers this will mean that the traditional SIGG bottles will not be manufactured and sold as a fuel bottle.
The pickies below show my MSR fuel bottle and a SIGG bottle purchased from Overland a few months ago. Clearly on the bottom of the SIGG bottle it is only for food and hot liquids but not fuel (petrol).
To comply with the Swiss legislation, it would appear that SIGG engineers have redesigned the stopper by using a non-neoprene sealing gasket (white in the picture) with a fail-safe channel running up the screwed area of the stopper. Tampering or removing the white gasket will allow any fluids to bypass any new gasket and cause leaking.
The solution is to replace the SIGG stopper with a MSR stopper, as used on MSR Fuel bottles, for about £2. Job Done. I obtained my stoppers from Needle Sports, Keswick, Cumbria.

Hope this clears things up.

So the guy working for SIGG in this thread I posted a link to is wrong when he says this...
and this...The SIGG bottle should only be used as a WATER BOTTLE
It has a proprietary (sp) liner on the inside as well which may disolve when used with fuel."
SIGG has become very popular in the US this year do the concerns related to drinking from Poly Carbonate bottles which may leach BPA. The SIGGs liner is inert and non leaching, is flexible and will not crack or chip if the bottle is dented. IT SHOULD ONLY BE USED AS A WATER BOTTLE
I can't imagine dissolved plastic being much good for an internal combustion engine so is your info source 100% correct?

'The' solution is My solution. On further inspection of the inside of the SIGG bottle, there appears to be a covering over the aluminium as compared to the MSR bottle. If petrol dissolves this unidentified covering, it can only be microns thin, I will fill both of my two SIGGs with petrol, dissolve away the 'liner' and use the fuel in my lawn mower(s). Both my SIGGs are marked for 'Fuel Only'. I have filled one SIGG bottle half-full to observe a tide-line which will appear between a dissolved area and an unaffected area. What's all the fuss about? Up date to follow.

wow and heres me thinking they were just Parafin bottles !
never considered using them for petrol
What's all the fuss about? I was re-emphasising what the SIGG employee said. Your post gave the impression that the only issue was the stopper and once that was changed, "job done". Anyone coming to the thread late would have missed the bit about the lining. I don't know how much dissolved plastic is acceptable for use in an internal combustion engine - but I'd certainly like it to be as close to zero as possible.
If the plastic layer can be dissolved out of the bottle before use then that may well be job done but I think I'd just get an MSR in the first place.

yeh ,
your correct Alan h ,
from the preverbial mouth of "sigg":
the old now discountinued fuel bottles had a different seal and top.
They were unlined- unlike new food/water bottles.
the msr are unlined and have a fuel "safe" lid and seal [neoprene]
the primus have a coating also
the trianga ones are plastic of a grade made to withstand preesure
**** basically the lining in the sigg was added to stop the food/water tasting funnybut it does breakdown over time [how long they wont say]
but as your using it for a purpose not designed for you cant sue them [sigg] if it melts or nackers your stoves.
I have gone for a new MSR with child proof top and spare seal , thats my choice.
just didn`t want anyone buying a duff bottleyour choice

Don't know what all the fuss is about, I have been using 4, 1 ltr aluminium bottles that I bought from a camping shop, all 4 cost me £20 and I have them strapped to the back of my panniers!
They don't leak at all and I have used the fuel in them many times in the bike and had no problems.
Cheap solution and it works perfectly!
I was given a couple of MountainLife aluminium bottles for christmas and by way of experiment I filled one up with fuel and left it inverted. So far no leaks and the stopper and seal show no sign of attack. The were cheapies from Mountain Warehouse and were about £10 for two (buy on get one free).
