After The Nitromorse Fumes Have Gone?

So, thanks to some great advice I`ve begun to strip the paint from the yokes. Next in line is the forks, engine, swinger (?).

Being that theres some great rebuilds and restorations on here is there any chance you guys could give me some guidance as to the best primer, silver paint and clear to do all the respray jobs on the bike please?

It`d be easy for me to guess at a spray and get it horribly wrong so all assistance is gratefully received!

Also, I read about curing the paint. What sort of temps and times do you need to do it for?

I've used Hammerite smooth, Silver paint in the past on fork legs and engine cases. Sounds horrendous, I know, but I've had some very good results. Usually seems to last much better than original OE paint, fills minor imperfections, and looks good finish.

Only issue might be getting a match with surrounding paint, but is you are stripping and repainting complete components, shouldn't be an issue!

Other option, though more expensive would be silver Powder coating. I've seen some amazing results with this! Although needs to be done professionally and therefore more expensive!

There you go! I've started you off with the budget option, and the Deluxe option. I'm sure others will be along soon with plenty of other options in between!

ive used silver hammerite aswell... and its great - let is dry and then put a clear laquer on.... youll be pleased with the finish..

remember..... dont try and put too much on at each coat....

i used black smoothrite (smooth finish hammerite) in aerosol can to spray the rear wheel of my last VFR. The stuff was solid, even stood up to wheel changes.

Covered a white wheel with no need for an undercoat in around 2 to 3 coats too

I'd go with Hammerite, its amazing stuff!!

I've just resprayed the frame and swingarm of my trials with smooth white hammerite and its looks bloody good now even if I do say so myself...much better than the monkey who had touched it up previously with Dulux emulsion wall paint...you could see the brush strokes in it...poor little bike!

Hammerite does seem to be in the lead at the mo! Mind you, I never knew it was available in spray cans! Just had a mooch at it on the `net and it does seem to be the perfect thing for the job. Is that right what the advertising bumf says, no primer, no clear over the top? Seems to good to be true!

Curzon, I`m planning on having the frame powder coated (Expoxy Powercoatings in Brum) so might just chuck the swinger in at the same time. Its got a bit of surface rust so ideally It`ll need blasting to get it super clean.

One place I am a tad concerned is the engine. Being air cooled won`t a few coats of paint reduce the heat transfer?

tis true about the no primer / no clear thing.

There is a "cylinder black" paint that is a satin black finish. The black colour increases heat transfer more than the insulating effect of a layer of paint
