Refinishing fork sliders.

I am in the middle of giving my Transalp a bit of TLC and would like to tidy up the scabby lacquer on the fork legs.I have started to strip it off but wondered what is best to coat them with afterwards.I do not want a highly polished finish.In the past I have used spray on silver Hammerite with good results.I have also tried Japlac but could not paint it on without it ending up full of brush marks although it gives a finish close to the original one.Can anyone offer any advise?

I've used Smoothrite in the past but it takes so much preparation to get a good finish that doesn't start flaking. The last set I reconditioned I took the plunge and spent a few quid getting them blasted and powder coated. The finish was far better and, by the time you take into account the cost of the smoothrite and the preparation, it wasn't really that much more costly.
